Did you know? When the doors of Howard University Law School opened on January 4, 1869, it was the first law school to provide African Americans exclusive access to outside the study of law. Access they previously did not enjoy.

Today there are currently six historically black law schools: Florida A&M University, Howard University, North Carolina Central University, Southern University, Texas Southern University, and the University of the District of Columbia.

Charlotte E. Ray (January 13, 1850-January 4, 1911) was the first black woman lawyer in the United States. In 1872, Charlotte received her law degree from Howard University and was certified in DC that same year. Making her the first African American woman lawyer in the United States.
