"A recent report by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at USC revealed that Latino representation in film has not improved in 16 years. In reviewing 1,600 films from 2007 to 2022, the report found that only 4.4% of all leads and co-leads were Latino. Within that timeline, a total of eight leading roles were held by Afro Latino actors."

Nominations for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards were released today, which included three Latino actor nominations, and three nominations for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

Lourdes Portillo is an award-winning director who is best known for her experimental documentaries. She is originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, and raised in Chihuahua, Mexicali and Los Angeles. Her body of work spans 18 films and she was nominated for an Academy award for the film Las Madres: The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (1986).

Our absolute favorite film is her modern take on the detective film, in the documentary The Devil Never Sleeps (1994) in which she investigates the death of a family member. Portillo combines traditional film genres including experimental and dramatic techniques to capture the nuances of her own Mexican family and the impact of culture and social attitudes.

This is a wonderful coming of age film that features a beautifully tender storyline and fantastic cinematography. Each actor gives an absolutely stellar performance. We highly recommend watching it! Frybread Face and Me is currently streaming on Netflix.

Luther, who is Diné, Hopi, and Laguna Pueblo, is part of a growing community of Native American filmmakers in Los Angeles. "Frybread Face and Me" premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March, and Netflix released the film on Friday, November 24.
