Getting up-to-date skills in emerging communication and journalism has not been easy in Tanzania. Most of the courses provided by colleges and universities are basics and some of them are becoming obsolete due to ever changing digital technologies.

Even those higher learning institutions which are offering most needed skills in the market such as Digital Journalism and Data Journalism, are doing so at higher prices which most of us cannot afford due to economic hardships. Based on my experience it is hard to find these kinds of institutions in Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam. There is unknown fear in Tanzania and the rest of Africa that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will come and replace people in the newsroom.

As we think about how AI will replace jobs in the media sector in Tanzania, there are initiatives in the newsroom to use AI. One such technological innovation that is gaining momentum is the use of bots in newsrooms across the world.

Despite the fear of AI, in recent years, Tanzania has gained momentum of using robotical cameras in the broadcasting newsroom. These cameras are not controlled by human beings.

From a trainee to a data-driven news website owner in Tanzania

When he was starting his journalism studies 10 years ago, he had a big dream of becoming one of the most famous and successful journalists in Tanzania.

By that time, Faraja Masinde, a fast-growing data journalist in Tanzania, was most inspired by great journalists who were writing analytical stories in the famous newspapers in the country.

“When I read articles from famous writers in the country I reminded myself that one day my name and my stories will be read too,” he said.

Even after completing his studies and being employed in one of the newspapers in Tanzania he still didn’t know how he could achieve his dreams of becoming a famous and most successful journalist.

In the fourth year of his career, Mr Masinde saw an opportunity online about data journalism training by Nukta Africa. He could not ask himself twice to enroll.
