Meet the people behind the podcast!

Hi everyone! My name is Laurie, I'm 30 years old and I am from Glasgow. I graduated from NUI Galway last November with a Masters in Coastal & Marine Environments, and in August I'll be moving to England to start a career in offshore renewable energy! I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the podcast (episode 4, check it out!) We had such a laugh!

I do not have a stammer, but my dad does. John McIntosh? You may have heard of him. Stammering is something that I've always been acutely aware of, but at the same time, it's never been a big deal. As it's a part of my father’s life, it’s been somewhat part of my life. I'll try to explain...

Growing up, I had a hilarious, always present, ever supportive father. He was my dad and the greatest man on the planet. What did I care how he spoke? It was what he said that mattered. However, I was always aware that other people might not have the same approach to stammering. My very first argument as a child was with a nursery thug who was mocking another kid for stuttering. I think it was the first time I ever experienced a human being be cruel for no reason. I didn't understand why having a stammer was an issue or why you would find it funny. I did, however, understand bullying and it broke my heart. So, I don't stammer - but I can understand and empathise with how difficult it can be. Which is why I love this podcast! It's full of great characters, interesting conversations and lots of laughs. I'm very glad to have been a part of it.

Meet the people behind the podcast!
Say hello to Kris Blak!

Hi, I’m Kris, and I live in the sunny wee town of Barrhead. I’m engaged to Ashley and we have a six-year-old son, Sean.
I work as an entertainer and I have a stammer! Strangely enough, I don’t stammer while I’m entertaining - (it’s apparently something to do with which side of the brain controls creativity versus the side that controls speech and stammering). Unfortunately, with the Covid-19 lockdown in place and no venues open to work in, I’m currently working as a driver for Tesco.
I’m quite a shy person when you first meet me, but I soon come out of my shell when you get to know me. I’ve had a stammer for as long as I can remember but I always seemed to hide it fairly well so tried to put it to the back of my mind. However, in the past few years I’ve realised that was perhaps not the best thing to do. In autumn of 2018, I got in contact with James Stewart from the Scottish Stammering Network and he invited me along to the monthly support meetings and suggested self-referral to speech therapy which I sought out and attended. I’m now quite an active participant with the charity and enjoy taking part in the “Oh, And On That Note” podcast – I make an appearance on episode 5, 6, 8, and 10!
My advice to anyone affected by a stammer, whether it be yourself or a family member/friend, is get in touch with the Scottish Stammering Network (or the equivalent in your area). Come along once the lockdown is over and join in!
Remember, a stammer is nothing to be ashamed of!!

Last week, Tom, John and Christina had the pleasure of being guests on another great stammering podcast from across the pond - Stuttering is Cool. We chatted about some of our favourite podcast memories, made a few confessions and Canadians reconnected!

I chat with the people behind "Oh and on that note…", a podcast about stuttering yet it has nothing to do with stuttering!

Meet the people behind the podcast!
Say hello to Christina Parker!

Hi everyone! I am a Canadian from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, but am currently living in beautiful Scotland! After completing my BA double major in British History and Political Science, I worked for the BC Public Service for a few years before moving here to complete my masters in Nationalism Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Anyone that knows me can attest that I am a travel fanatic so please comment if you have Scottish destination recommendations!

I was quite involved with the Canadian Stuttering Association and feel very luck to have been welcomed so warmly by the Scottish Stammering Network once I made the move across the pond. I made my podcast debut on episode 8 and have somehow wiggled my way into making an appearance ever since.

For many years, I allowed my stammer to take control as the real me quietly hid in its shadow. If there is one thing I’ve learned throughout my experience, it is that you must make a deliberate choice to not let your speech consume you. I was wrong to think my stammer was holding me back from reaching my full potential – it was me setting the limits for myself, not my speech.

If you are interested in reading more about my stammering journey, I have included a link below.

Meet the people behind the podcast!
Say hello to the one, the only, John McIntosh!

Hi - I’m John, I am 60 years old, from Glasgow, Scotland and have stammered for as long as I remember. After graduating with a degree in English Literature, I worked in social care for many years - mainly because I could not envisage entering a profession that made big demands on my speech. At the age of 35, married with two young daughters, I decided to become a high school English teacher. I continued this career until last August when I retired.

In 2004, at age 45, I completed a McGuire Programme Course and was active for some years. I am currently on the management committee of the Scottish Stammering Network and the main support group for PWS in Scotland. Finally, I also helped establish the 'Oh and On That Note' podcast, which aims to get stammering voices out there in the public domain, and have had the pleasure of appearing on every episode.

Meet the people behind the podcast!
Give a special hello to Tom Costelloe - the mastermind behind our podcast!

Hi, I’m Tom from Galway in the west of Ireland (living in Scotland for the past few years). I play squash, love to explore the outdoors, and I enjoy writing. I work as a children’s Speech and Language Therapist here in Edinburgh.

When I was at the Scottish Stammering Network open day a couple of years ago it suddenly hit me that I never really see or hear people stammer from day to day - not on my telly or radio...nowhere. Over half a million people in the UK, of all creeds and cultures, happen to stammer and have plenty to say - why aren’t we hearing it? I figured that a conversational podcast, that happens to feature people who stammer, would be a good starting point. I chatted to a few great people following the open day and we made it happen. I didn’t really think I’d still be involved but it turns out it’s a lot of fun and now the others can’t get rid of me!

As someone who doesn’t stammer, it took me a while to get to the point where I could listen to ‘what’ is being said without also focusing on ‘how’ it’s being said. But ‘what’ is being said is far more important and interesting...I’ve really enjoyed hearing about podcast listeners getting to that realization as well.

Meet the people behind the podcast!
Say hello to Cheryl King!

Hi, I’m Cheryl and I’m from Kirkcaldy, Fife (the ‘Langtoun’). I started stammering when I was 3 years old and was virtually mute throughout my life until well into my thirties. I was absolutely terrified to speak.

I became involved in the podcast after I plucked up the courage to attend a Scottish Stammering Network (SSN) open day in Edinburgh, in April 2018. That day completely changed my life! I was suddenly - and for the first time in my life - surrounded by others who spoke a bit like me. Tom Costelloe, a speech and language therapist, got up at the end of the open day to say he had an idea to start a podcast to raise awareness of stammering. I later emailed James Stewart, the SSN chairperson, register interest for Tom’s podcast - and to ask if I could run my own support group. And the rest, as they say, is history!!!!! I have made an appearance on episode 1, 2, 3, and 7.

My advice for other stammers is to first accept your stammer - nothing you do to control it will work otherwise. We are all unique so go with what works for you.

What do you think?!

As we move into the 'new normal', we're encountering new experiences with our speech.

How do you feel masks may effect your speech? What are some of the positives or negatives?

Also, please keep the focus of the comments about stammering (and avoid using the 'c' word as much as possible).

Welcome to 'Oh and on that note.....' Podcast Page!

-- In association with the Scottish Stammering Network --

The idea of the podcast is simple: get some good people around a table every month, some of whom happen to have a stammer, and chat nonsense. We raise current news topics and link them to something we ACTUALLY want to talk about, using the words ‘oh and on that note’.

The main aim of the podcast is that it's a good laugh!! In a country with over half a million people who have a stammer, you would be forgiven for thinking that it's a very rare phenomenon. The podcast is a platform for people who stammer to have their voices heard and an opportunity for people who have had little exposure to stammering to begin to hear WHAT is being said, not how it's being said.

Have a listen and spread the word!
Available on Spotify, iTunes and Soundcloud.
