Who’s that lady? Umm, it’s Valerie Solanas, creator of a handful of off off Broadway plays you’ve probably never heard of (“Up Your Ass”). She’s also the woman behind the SCUM Manifesto, a work of literature that says men are the root of all EVIL 👿 and it’s up to women to band together and save humanity 💪. Find out about her ties to Andy Warhol in episode 4. As we will see, Art imitates life….

What happened to Andy Warhol in 1968 to leave him so terribly scarred- mentally and physically? Find out about Andy Warhol on Episode 4 of Blank Canvas.

This is from a series of photographs by Richard Avedon in 1969- a year after the “incident”….

Leo’s assistant/lover Salai also played the role of art model. That is, when he wasn’t drinking too much 🍻 and breaking things around the house…😩

This is da Vinci’s painting of John the Baptist- Salai was most likely his model. See if you see any similarities between him and another famous da Vinci painting 🤔

Saint John the Baptist (Salai?), Leonardo da Vinci, 1513-1516, oil on panel, Louvre Museum, Paris

This baby has muscles! 🤷‍♀️🧐 On episode 3 we talk a bit about da Vinci’s Virgin of the Rocks (there are two versions of this painting). I am always struck by how developed baby Jesus’s muscles are…I don’t think Leo hung out around many babies IRL….🤔

In 1505 Raphael was an apprentice in the workshop of da Vinci (he was a big fan ☺️). During this time, Raphael did this sketch of a young woman. This drawing is based on da Vinci’s early version of the Mona Lisa. It definitely looks like a different woman than the one we see today in the Louvre…. Find out more on Episode 3!

The Mona Lisa is supposed to be a portrait of a real Italian woman named Lisa del Giocondo. However, there is a lot of conflicting and confusing information surrounding what she really looked like. As we will see in Episode 3 of Blank Canvas, there are different versions of the Mona Lisa (all the women look a bit different!). Is the Mona Lisa in the Louvre really a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo? Find out more details in Episode 3 ! Swipe to see some of the different versions….

You think you know this painting…but do you really? Did you know there are different versions of the Mona Lisa… Who is (s)he?

No, we are not going to talk about Catholic cults, conspiracy, or Dan Brown. We are going to talk about Da Vinci though because he was one secretive dude….

One of my favorite self portraits of Vincent- also one of his last, painted in 1889. I love the color palette, how he just seems to blend into the background. I think of it as symbolic of how he saw himself. A man of observation, a man of solitude, and a man who tended to have periods in his life where he felt very “blue” and alone. Find a bit more about this painting, as well as the final days of VVG on episode 2 of Blank Canvas 🤗

Episode 2 Explores the controversy behind something that Vincent is infamous for - cutting off his own ear. As we will see, the act itself, as well as the events leading up to the incident are anything but straightforward. What do we know really happened? Gauguin definitely plays a part in this episode as well 🧐….

Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, painted January 1889, shortly after the “ear incident.”

Episode 2 launches tomorrow!

This is the only confirmed photograph of Vincent, taken before he went to London to try a career as an art dealer (1873). Of course, it wasn’t a successful career. In his art Vincent became interested in what he called the modern portrait- he wanted to communicate in a painting what couldn’t be said/felt in a photo.

What do you think 🤔 when you compare his portraits with a photo?
