At Selah Studio, I believe in the power of empathy, authenticity, and knowledge.

🌿 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 🌿
Empathy is the ability to recognize, understand, and share the thoughts and feelings of another person, animal, or fictional character. It is the capacity to place oneself in another's position. Empathy is rooted in love. I believe in creating a world with more empathy in it – and it starts with you and me, and the community we can create together.

🌿 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 🌿
Being authentic involves the ability to be introspective and understand what motivates oneself. Psychologists Michael Kernis and Brian Goldman developed an Authenticity Inventory in 2000 comprised of four key factors: Self-awareness, unbiased processing (clarity in evaluating one's own strengths and weaknesses), acting in ways congruent with one's own values and needs despite the risk of criticism or rejection, and close relationships that require openness and honesty. Be real, it's the only way to make a real impact.

🌿 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 🌿
Knowledge is the awareness, understanding, or information that has been obtained by experience or study. The saying goes, "People are destroyed for lack of knowledge." To be empowered, learn. But how can one learn without education? And how can one educate without knowledge? We can all give something valuable to each other - we can all give some knowledge. And we can all keep learning (and unlearning) when new knowledge comes around.

Social media marketing and psychology have always fascinated me. So, for my MBA thesis, I studied the offline brand outcomes of Instagram when psychological variables got involved.

If you're curious and would like a snippet of the study, read on (warning: technical language coming up).

The study aimed to determine the extent to which consumers’ brand “Follows” are self-congruent due to their cognitive networks or the perception of their social network structure on Instagram. The study also examines if self-congruity results in positive offline brand outcomes when mediated by brand love.

Results indicated that social tie strength significantly affects self-congruity while brand love is a significant mediator on the relationship between self-congruity and offline brand outcomes (such as brand loyalty and word-of-mouth). Of the three perceived homophily (attitude homophily, status homophily and morality homophily), findings show that morality homophily is the stronger predictor for social tie strength among consumers and their friends on Instagram.

This means that people who share the same moral values have a stronger bond with one another on Instagram, and the stronger the bonds between Instagram users and their connections on Instagram, the more self-congruent they are; and the more self-congruent they are, the more likely they are to take action for your brand.

The findings suggest that in order to target Instagram users like that, brands are recommended to be categorised based on moral ties.

To put it simply, therefore, brands that promote their values will attract followers who share the same values. And followers who share the same values are more likely to convert.

I had the honour and privilege of working together with Straw Lim, a unique, indie, Malaysian singer-songwriter!

Straw is a local artist who confronts social issues with the music she makes and dives head first into topics like diversity and inclusivity, environment and sustainability, power and corruption.

I love many things about Straw, but one of the best parts about working with her is how psychologically safe she is. Hiccups and errors (and typos and videos mistakenly being flagged as violating community guidelines) happen, and they happen very often in the world of social media (glitches and bugs, anybody?) and each time things don't go as planned, she is gracious and creates room for growth. They say that the times of crises bring out the best and worst of people. And I've had the privilege of experiencing the best of her during these times.

Here are snippets of us finally relieved after spending hours conducting street interviews for her upcoming project!

For some of you who don't know, I just officially launched Selah Studio early last month. Starting off wasn't the easiest, but it's an absolute adventure and definitely worthwhile.
