FLASH REPORT:

POLICE INVESTIGATE TWO ALLEGED MURDER CASES IN NORTH BANK REGION

Date: October 1, 2025

The Police are investigating two separate alleged murder cases in the North Bank Region, both involving minors.

The first incident occurred in Ndofan Village on September 29, where a four-year-old boy, Musa Manneh, was allegedly struck on the head with a stone by a 16-year-old, Samba Faal. The victim later died, and arrangements are underway for a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect.

The second case, also on September 29, happened in Daru Rilwan, involving Modou Njie (15, deceased) and Mutarr Jawara (13, suspect). After falling off a motorcycle on their way to cut grass for their horses, an altercation broke out during which Mutarr allegedly stabbed Modou in the neck with a sickle. Modou was confirmed dead at Njaba Kunda Health Centre.

Crime scene investigators visited both scenes. In the Daru Rilwan case, the sickle believed to be the murder weapon, along with other related evidence, was recovered for forensic analysis.

The Police urge parents and guardians to exercise greater vigilance over children, encourage peaceful conflict resolution, and ensure that minors do not have access to dangerous objects.

Statement by President Adama Barrow in His Address to the Nation

Fellow Gambians,

It is with a heavy heart that I address you following the recent disturbances which have led to the tragic loss of life and injury- affecting both citizens and members of our security services.
Every life lost is a loss for our entire nation, and each injury is a reminder of the preciousness of peace.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Omar Badjie and assure them, as well as all affected families, of our prayers and state support in this difficult time.

I also wish a swift recovery to all those injured, including our dedicated law enforcement officers.
As a nation that cherishes democracy and unity, this is a defining moment for us. We must renew our commitment to peaceful engagement and lawful expression.

The right to protest peacefully is a cornerstone of our democracy—protected by our Constitution and respected by this government.
Let us, however, remember that violence, destruction of property, and threats to public safety undermine the very freedoms we seek to protect and will be addressed firmly by law.
It is essential that all grievances—especially those of our youth, who are the heart and hope of this country—are channelled through constructive, lawful avenues.

I want to assure every Gambian, particularly our young people, that my administration is listening. Your aspirations are at the centre of our national agenda and your voices matter.
Ours is a government open to dialogue: let us work together—through established institutions and youth platforms—to resolve concerns peacefully and constructively.

While most Gambians seek only peaceful means to express themselves, a small minority may attempt to exploit these moments for personal or political gain.

Let us not allow our unity or progress to be derailed by those who pursue division or seek to incite unrest.

The government remains vigilant in protecting all lawful rights, and those who resort to violence or incite it, will be held accountable in accordance with due process and respect for human rights.
To our security forces: I urge continued professionalism, restraint, and respect for the rights of all citizens. Uphold our Constitution, act with wisdom, and protect public order in a manner worthy of the confidence Gambians have placed in you.

Let us all reaffirm our shared responsibility for peace, stability, and the continued development of our country. Our robust democratic institutions—National Assembly, courts, civil society—provide the channels for every grievance to be addressed. Let us use them and reject any path that leads to disorder and harm.

As we move forward, let unity, respect for one another, and commitment to our national values guide us. Only together, through peaceful engagement and shared responsibility, will we build the Gambia of our dreams.
May the Almighty bless our beloved nation and guide us towards greater peace and progress.

I thank you all.

POLICE RESPOND TO INCIDENT IN MANDINARY

Date: September 27, 2025

The Gambia Police Force wishes to update the public on the incident that occurred in Mandinary on Friday, September 26, 2025, during routine visibility patrols conducted by officers under the jurisdiction of the Mandinary Police Post.

During the patrol, officers encountered a group of young men suspected of smoking prohibited substances. On seeing the patrol team, the group dispersed in different directions. In the process, one of the youths, identified as Omar Badjie, 27 years old, collapsed and lost consciousness while fleeing. He was immediately rushed by the patrol team to the Banjulinding Health Centre and later referred to the Kanifing General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Following news of the incident, a group of youths in Mandinary and surrounding communities launched violent attacks on officers and vandalized the Mandinary Police Post. The situation escalated further as officers on duty and even off-duty personnel passing through the community, such as PC 9728 Assan Jallow of the Anti-Crime Unit, were subjected to assault causing serious bodily harm.

To restore order, reinforcements were deployed from the Police Intervention Unit in Brikama, later supported by units from Kanifing. Police engaged community leaders, including the Alkalo and the Village Development Committee (VDC). While dispersing violent groups that had blocked roads and set tires ablaze, tear gas was used to disperse the rioters, after which the situation stabilized. Unfortunately, twelve police officers sustained serious injuries during the confrontation, and the Mandinary Police Post suffered extensive damage.

A total of 19 individuals have been arrested in connection with the disturbances. They are currently helping with the investigation. The details of those arrested include residents of Mandinary and surrounding areas, with ages ranging from minors to adults.

The Gambia Police Force extends condolences to the family of the late Omar Badjie and assures the public that the circumstances of his death will be investigated diligently. Anyone found wanting will face the full course of the law. At the same time, the attacks against police officers and the destruction of public property are equally matters of serious concern and will not go unaddressed.

The Gambia Police Force reiterates that its primary duty is to protect lives, maintain law and order, and ensure community safety. The youth of Mandinary and all communities across the country are urged to exercise restraint, remain disciplined, and respect the rule of law in the resolution of disputes. Violence against security personnel and destruction of public facilities only undermine peace and stability, which are essential for the welfare of all citizens.

The situation in Mandinary is now under control, and normalcy has been restored. Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and the public will be duly informed of further developments.
