We are almost done with the episode!

Image description: an excited-looking pre-transformation Cinderella looks at some fabric on a chest. Accompanying the picture are the words “Cinderella puts away all the materials from one project before starting something else.”

Above that is a tweet “Feeling very judged by Cinderella.”

(Kathryn) I love this meme because it's hilarious.

But I also love it because it reminds us that every single character in a fairy tale has their own story to tell.

We're meant to identify with Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack ... but what if we could see echoes of the wicked queen, the big bad wolf, the giant atop the beanstalk inside ourselves, too? How might our sense of the story -- and ourselves -- shift, expand, even heal?

(Lia) Sometimes it's fine to run away, but, things catch up to you in the end. My reflections on Snow White.

Snow White leaves one with the feeling that sometimes it’s right to run away. Abandoned by her father, abused and persecuted by the Queen, the only sensible thing to do is to bolt. Through the dark forest and the terror she runs, until she stumbles on a safe place. With the inhabitants of this new...

You guys! Episode two is coming ! Thank you for supporting us and being patient. There’s quite a learning curve in GarageBand, I’m learning the audio editing as I go, and that’s what is taking so long. One thing you could do until then is make sure to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a (hopefully favorable) review on Apple Podcasts or your preferred platform.

We have so many exciting show ideas planned for you. (Don’t think we are ignoring this Mermaid Moment either.) Thank you for believing in Kath and me, and !

(Lia) Hmmm, so what do we think, apple biters? I'm going to be honest, this story has always creeped me out (hello, Freud) and the original Disney version has a lot of weird butt jokes (rewatch it), even for me. I guess I'm double dunking on this movie today because not only does a live action Pinocchio creep me out a bit, I'm also kind of irritated at the casting of the Beloved Tom Hanks as Gepetto. I dunno. It's 2022. Couldn't they have gotten Roberto Benigni or something? An Italian American actor? We Italian Americans are hardly marginalized in this day and age, but still. Tom Hanks? Ok. I'm sure he's charming and I'll cry when I watch him develop deep feelings for some animate chunks of wood. But I won't *like* crying.

When two of your favorite things are fairy tales and Stephen King books, and you find out Stephen King wrote a book named “Fairy Tale,” you pre-order it and binge read into the night.

Good quick read. Please note "impregnated" in the second paragraph should be preceded by "r***d and."

I've always read Athena's response to Medusa as a commentary on the way violence against women divides us from each other, causes us to side with our abusers rather than support and uplift one another.

This is a very different interpretation, which is interesting, and not necessarily exclusive of my own, though I'd argue with it in these ways:

- We might also see the story as Athena asking Medusa to hold *all* women's rage instead of holding it with her.
- We might see it as a call to be careful about whom you align yourself with.
- We might see it as a demand for solidarity among all oppressed people.

Other thoughts?

The story of Medusa is a story of the natural response to injustice, and of the vilifying of feminine rage. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Medusa was said to be born exceptionally beautiful, and because of this she caught the eye of Poseidon, who impregnated her in the temple of Athena. When Athena learned of this, it is said that she punished Medusa by turning her into a Gorgon and exiling her. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For ages the story of Medusa has put fear into people, but the true story here is that Medusa was a victim because of her physical beauty, and then she became empowered and as a result was feared. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What if Athena exiled and turned her it into a gorgon not as a punishment, but as an act of grace and empowerment? That never again should Medusa be violated? She gave her space and a powerful means to protect herself. Medusa now had the ability turn to stone anyone who came after her with the intent to harm or violate. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Even after Perseus managed to kill Medusa by her severing her head from her body, her power wasn’t diminished. It’s said that the blood from her head had the ability to both kill and to raise from the dead. A lock of her hair was used to protect an entire city!! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Medusa is a symbol of feminine rage. Patriarchy sees the female body as either something to exploit, to fear or to distain, rather than respect and revere. It certainly doesn’t want push back or empowered rage. So we’ve been spoon fed these ghastly distorted tales, warning women to “know their place”. But reading between the lines we see a while other story. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Righteous Rage alway has a place in society and within each of us. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In yesterday‘s post I spoke of the goddess Durga, with her many arms and her ability to destroy demons and to protect and liberate. What if Medusa is really just a vilified archetype similar to Durga? Imagine stopping violence and lies dead in its tracks just by one’s gaze ? By calling it for what it is? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Read between the lines, we see a whole other story of Medusa than what we’ve been fed. We see the story of righteous rage and feminine justice. And the power it has to destroy, heal and protect. ⁣⁣

In Episode 1: Take a Bite, I (Kathryn) courageously admit that I've never watched either Golden Girls or S*x and the City. Lia responds that I really should watch the Golden Girls but I could live my whole life without ever watching SATC and be a complete person.

Please vote in the comments below. Do you agree with Lia? If not, please justify your position with a well-thought-out argument or a meme.

In conclusion, there's no way I could have even written this article. I don't believe the author never actually watched it. https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/news/a7090/s*x-and-the-city-virgin/

16/05/2022

One of the questions we ask in Episode 1 of the Poison Apple Podcast is, "How do we envision Snow White at mid-life?"

Does she become, herself, the wicked queen? Is she cold as snow, vengeful as blood, troubled as all the dark knowledge she had to repress as a child?

Does she get the healing journey she needs to put the demons to rest and live into her own fullness -- confident and free and evolved?

Does she stay with the prince or ditch him?

If you got (or had) to write a film script for "Snow White: Perimenopause Edition," how would you write the title character? How has she evolved (or not)? What are the main obstacles she now faces? What strengths does she bring?

Complicate the story for us -- tell us your thoughts below!

We're no purists: We absolutely LOVE to see people playing with fairy tales! Thank you, Norway. You've given us lots of laughter this week. Who knew it was so simple to appease the Big Bad Wolf?

We'll likely have more to say about that country's fantastically absurd Eurovision entry, "Give That Wolf a Banana," when we do our Little Red Riding Hood episode. In the meantime, enjoy listening!

And if you know of other fun spinoffs or revisioning of fairy tales, drop us a DM and we'll add it to the watch list.
