In this episode, Daniel and Tanner talk more about critical thinking in the 21st century. They discuss the differences between modernism and postmodernism and truth relativism. They explain the dangers of logical fallacies and squabbling debates. ...

“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God
as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;
he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.

When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”

Philippians 2:3-8, NLT

Airing opinions is the easy thing to do. Stooping low to wash another’s feet is the hard thing to do.

“No other piece of ancient literature has such an abundance of manuscript witnesses as does the New Testament” (New International Version Bible Committee, NIV, vi).

“I think sometimes we look for the silver bullet in these situations. We look for the one conversation, the one letter, the one podcast, the one social media post, the one book that’s gonna be the key to everything. And throughout thousands of years of faith it can be messy more often than it is pristine. And so, I think part of it is being okay with this process actually being a process and taking some time.” Tanner Versage, Until Another Comes Along, Part 1. Streaming now everywhere.

"Truth" is a tricky subject that post-modernism has tirelessly redefined.

So how does the professing Christian respond to the endless Biblical passages regarding "truth"?

The truth is a topic the New/Old Testament writers as well as the Early Church Fathers were not shy of speaking about.

Irenaeus was a Greek Church Father and apologist, born around 115 AD. He was from Smyrna, along with Polycarp (AD 69-155), who was a student of the apostle John. In c. 180, Irenaeus wrote in his book Against Heresies:

"A sound mind . . . that is devoted to piety and love of truth will eagerly meditate upon those things that God has placed within the power of mankind and has subjected to our knowledge. . . . Such a mind will advance in the knowledge of those things . . . by means of daily study. I am referring to those things that fall under our observation and are clearly and unambiguously set forth in the sacred Scriptures in clear terms."

In the world we live in, there is intense hate. There is real, unjust racial discrimination. There are political actions that cause anger, and result in forgotten or underserved people groups. The world is dark and broken.

There is a constant saturation of media through every possible technological outlet (phone, tablet, computer... watches) that now “fixing your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 12:2) becomes harder and harder as our emotions become compromised by the world and its faculties. The darkness is yelling at us in our pockets, on our wrists, from our TVs.

In the 21st century, living a lifestyle of holiness and Christlike, servant love is impossible if our personal social media profile contradicts personal faith or theology. We can’t be Jesus followers in real life and be something else online.

Social media is a powerful tool. If we choose to utilize it righteously, it can become an extension of our faith, and can stir a world that has become a melting pot of every possible opinion and more.

When wisdom and prudence are paired with action and faith, our technological devices can be world-changing.

“Disciple making takes more faith than any other task of the church. Since it is top priority to God, it is top priority for Satan. No work of God’s servant draws more resistance than disciple making.” -Bill Hull

Perhaps the hardest thing in today’s world is being involved in social media while continuing to proclaim the message of Christ clearly. We don’t need to post Bible scriptures all the time, and we don’t need to totally refrain from voicing our opinions.

But as a Christian, it is absolutely vital that we speak without knowingly compromising our righteousness and without exchanging our allegiance to Jesus with our own opinion or agenda.

The need of the day is to persuade people to believe in God and to follow Jesus.

If all our time is spent with people who say they already know the Bible and are already Christians, then we too easily miss the sea of people who are looking for God for the very first time.

If we more frequently have conversations with Christians about their Biblical doctrine than we do with those throughout the world who are seeking Jesus like sheep without a shepherd, then we're missing so many opportunities to save souls.

There is a time and a place for Biblical discourse, but be sure not to pass by God-given opportunities to serve the neighbors among you because you're so focused on trying to prove a point to a friend.

When you change a light bulb, you probably first observe that a lightbulb has reached the end of its life, and trust that a new light bulb will produce light, just the same way that light bulbs always have in the past.

You know that if the old bulb were changed with a brand new light bulb, there would again be light. You consider how nice it would be if the room you were sitting in were lit again, and you reminisce on all the well-lit memories you spent in your now dimmed and poorly-lit living area.

You know exactly how light is created from a bulb because of all the long hours you spent studying in your Optics class for your Electrical Engineering degree. You recall that the switch on a lamp creates a heated resistance in the filament inside of a bulb, and you remember the zero oxygen atmosphere, replaced by argon and nitrogen inside of the bulb in order to contain the illuminative heat cause by the friction of the filament, which the naked eye then observes as light.

You go to sleep that night, deciding to buy a new bulb the next day.

You get up, go to work, and perform your daily tasks and duties. When you get home that night, you remember the bulb isn't working and that you forgot to buy a new one, but it's late and time for bed, so you decide to wait until the next day to buy a new bulb. But the same thing happens again a day later. And again. And again. And again.

The bulb never gets changed, and there is never light.

You get used to the way things feel in your house without any light.

Your eyes and lifestyle start to adjust accordingly so that the dimly lit room can be utilized without properly fixing the problem.

Eventually, you don't even realize the bulb is out.

"Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us." Titus 2:7-8, ESV

With the extension of our voices through social media, we are no longer in a world where posting a thought online is any different than saying something with our mouths to someone in person.

Texting a friend can be just as effective for relaying information as calling them, and spending an afternoon Zooming or Facetiming your family may be easier and more practical than spending time together in person.

In a day and age where the internet is in everyone's pockets, the extension of our voices throughout every facet of social media should be self-assessed just as strongly as we reflect on our own speech in real life.

The way we write every Facebook status, take every Instagram picture, Hashtag every Tweet, share any TikTok— post any form of communication— whether video, picture, written word, audio file, GIF, graphic, or otherwise— should be viewed through the lens of the ones seeing what we post.

Is the reputation of Jesus brought into question when I “open my mouth” on social media? Do the words I use and posts I share convey to others that I am a devout follower of Jesus Christ, or do they convey that I’m more concerned with getting my point across than in glorifying God?
