Polygamy part 1 Not Another Mum Pod podcast
And here it is. POLYGAMY - the second wife’s perspective! Listener discretion is advised.
Salaams!
If there’s one topic than can get everyone’s blood boiling and heart racing - it’s polygamy! It’s probably THE most polarising topic in Islam and understandably, most women in that situation prefer not to talk about it in detail.
When recent discussions about polygamy were escalated by a prominent sister in our community, we thought that as podcasters, it was the right time to cover this hot topic - with an objective view where we could 😅
We’ve put together a two-part series on polygamy, and in part one we speak to a second wife who reveals the truth behind why she became a part of a polygamous marriage, how she navigates her relationship with her husband and the impact it has had on the kids.
Episode details are below. Would love your feedback and thoughts!
-------------------------
Villain or heroine, friend or foe? We’ll let you decide as we speak to second-wife Layla who shares her story of how she became caught up in a love triangle.
From dealing with sharing her husband to revealing what goes on behind closed doors, we ask Layla all the difficult questions about her life with the ‘man who has it all’ … or does he? Tune in and let us know your thoughts!
This is the first part of two episodes covering stories of polygamy in Islam, hearing directly from the wives in question. Listener discretion is advised.

How I survived mental health
With the start of a new year, many are reflecting on their lives and plans for the coming months. This episode delves into how mental health issues can be managed in effective ways with small changes. Why is it an issue in our community?
“There isn’t a lot of language around how to describe mental health within our community. The first thing that I used to think about is I’m going to get labeled as someone who’s just mad and crazy because that’s how people start to see you. They start to think that there’s something very wrong with you. They might not want to talk to you because they think that you’re not normal.
I think that’s very sad. The more that we do share, the less shame. And the less insecurities we have about sharing our stories, the more it will become a normal part of a conversation as we do with other things, so it’s really taking back that control.”
Mental Health is a topic that is still massively misunderstood in our community. This episode is the first of a series that will be looking at the challenges women face that impact their mental health, and how we can acknowledge, heal and protect it.
In today’s show, sister Harmeet Bharya speaks candidly about her mental health and the impact it has had on her life and health from losing her baby to feeling suicidal. Join our conversation to find out how Harmeet faced some incredibly dark moments in her life and how she came through it stronger, empowered with a positive attitude and outlook.
Trigger warning: viewer discretion advised – themes of baby loss, postnatal depression and suicidal thoughts.

Child Bride: A Story of Survival and Self-Discovery, Samra Zafar
Whilst watching the match last night, I couldn't relax and not solely for the reasons generally expected. I couldn't relax because I kept wondering about those women who waited in the wings wondering if a loss of the match would rain down more fists and kicks that night. What state would their partners be in when they came home? Domestic abuse after a loss of such a game rises by 38%.
38%!!!

Child Bride: A Story of Survival & Self-Discovery (with Samra Zafar)
Episode 12: Child Bride: A Story of Survival & Self-Discovery (Samra Zafar)
WARNING: this is an explicit episode with adult themes and language; themes of abuse and violence.
“People have this idea that child marriage is like a child being taken, kicking and screaming into a room and being chained or roped up or tied up, and then forced to sign somewhere. Force is not a gun to your head or a knife to your throat.
Force is coercion. Force is pressure. Force is that invisible, intangible cycle that is created around you, that if you say no, you're damned, and if you say yes, you're damned.”
How many of us know someone or have heard about someone who has suffered from domestic abuse? How many of us know someone or have heard of someone who has been pressured or coerced into a marriage? This episode delves right into a harrowing story of how Samra Zafar was pressured into a marriage at a young age only to be stifled into an existence of abuse from her parents to husband and mother-in-law. From emotional abuse to spiritual, from verbal to physical, from sexual to financial abuse - there was no stone unturned. Samra rose from the ashes by finding the courage to learn what was happening to her. Armed with knowledge, she began to plan her escape. Samra Zafar is now an award-winning international speaker, author, scholar, and entrepreneur who advocates for equity, inclusion, and human rights.

EPISODE 11: LIVE FROM THE GAZA STRIP: THE UNTOLD STORY BEHIND THE HORROR
This was probably one of the most important conversations we have ever had. It was a privilege and an honour, and to be honest, sometimes a little bit scary. We just didn't know if our guest would live long enough to have this conversation. We recorded this on the day of the ceasefire after Eid.
We are being censored and this is not showing up on feeds. Our insta post got the least traction compared to other episodes so this censoring of Palestine is real. Share the link everywhere and let's combat this together.
Please have a listen, and share all feedback with us. Nisreen will be reading everything. Share this episode with all your contacts and help her story get out.
Today’s episode is hard-hitting and at times emotional, but really, really important. As the world dissects what’s happening in Palestine, we’re putting aside the politics for now, and focussing on the humans of Palestine: the souls behind the statistics, the reality on the ground, what it’s really like to live and grow up in the Gaza Strip, and what life is like under occupation and under siege.
In this episode we talk to Nisreen Al-Khatib, a married, 27 year old mother to a one year old baby boy, living in the Gaza Strip since she was 5 years-old. She is the Co-Founder of Quds News Network and tells her story from the heart.
Trigger warning: This episode has themes of war, violence and terror. The audio on this post is a short taster clip.

Syeda Warsi on Palestine
An excellent, excellent summary of the government polices that are present yet not implemented when it comes to the rights of Palestine. Absolutely love Baroness Syeda Warsi for her outspoken, unapologetic stance where she didn't just speak, but acted too.
In 2014, Warsi resigned from the Government citing concerns that she was no longer able to support the Cameron Government's policy on the escalation of violence in the Israel–Gaza conflict, describing the Government's position as "morally indefensible". In her resignation letter, Warsi wrote that the UK Government's "approach and language during the current crisis in Gaza is morally indefensible, is not in Britain’s national interest and will have a long-term detrimental impact on our reputation internationally and domestically" and that it was "not consistent with the rule of law and our long support for international justice."
Happy Eid Alaba
Okay, let's try saying Eid Mubarak again...
...nope, that's not it...👀🤦♀️
Palestinian Ambassador to the UK with a BBC journalist
An excellent discourse between Palestinian Ambassador to the UK with a BBC journalist. Watch his frustration against Emily's incessant questioning regarding Hamas and rockets.
"You always start with the symptom of the illness and not the illness itself...you always start with the reaction rather than the act itself."
UPDATE:
The same BBC journalist who 'questioned' the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, grilled the Israeli Ambassador to the UK! She did not hold back at all!
