“I am convinced I don’t know how to do your movie. It’s always a blank piece of paper”. -Hans Zimmer I heard this quote the other day, and it hit hard, because it literally explains the feeling I have with every new mixing or production project I get involved in. You don’t ever really know what’s going to happen when you start creating a piece of music with someone else and that’s what makes it so damn exciting. Artistic experimentation and trial and error with a team of creatives is probably the most thrilling thing I’ve experienced, and nothing get’s me more hyped than when someone says: “I wonder what it would sound like if we….”. So thankful for the artists who trust me with a part of their creative journey, to explore that process together.

There’s nothing better than that feeling you get, when you suddenly know you’ve stumbled into a great song idea. That’s exactly how Sam and I felt when we started producing the bridge of “I Remember When” spontaneously on a Zoom call at the beginning of lockdown. This new song produced and performed by @mrikmusic is an absolute masterpiece of retro 80’s synth-pop influences with a modern twist. I connected with MRIK through a mutual friend over a shared obsession with retro influenced pop artists like The Midnight, Night Travelers, and The Weekend and was pumped AF when he asked me to mix this song and add some extra indie-pop guitar layers to it. The whole creative team (from India🇮🇳 to USA🇺🇸) that came together to make this song happen was incredible, and there’s more to come! When Will brought the song “Stand By You” to me, the first thing that struck me was the raw authenticity of the vocal in the chorus. In our first convo about the song, we knew almost immediately that every decision we made in the production and mixing process would need to be hyper-focused on supporting and matching the emotion of that vocal performance with a soundscape that brought the listener into the story in those lyrics in a compelling way. We spent a tonnnn of our time together on this project just bouncing ideas to each other, experimenting with the sound design that basically went like: “hey I tried this really weird thing that sounds kinda cool” and “I’m hearing this sound in my head, I wonder if we can make it with stock Logic plugins?” We ended up with a really minimalist approach to the production that was focused on creating subtle tension in the instrumental, pulling the music forwards with a sense of rising anticipation, which built up to a massive final chorus.
