The Great Depression.

This is a term I coined for a certain feeling of despair and emptiness felt mostly by people who live overseas.

I lived in Europe for more than 2 years, and in that time, I felt it too at many different occasions.

And it is quite ironical because you look around, and everything around you is supposed to make you feel innately happy, at peace and fulfilled.

You have a great job/career, the environment is life-friendly, there’s infrastructure and you’re financially comfortable.

But something seems to be missing, and you cannot exactly place your hands on it.

I would wake up everyday and head out to my schedules; eat good food, meet unique and different people, hold great conversations, stay pelted by the cold chilly weather and have an amazing time at the football stadium, but still, on the days when I am off practice, at home, alone and circumspecting, I would realize that there’s this nudging emptiness and aloneness somewhere deep within.

At some point I had to discuss this with some other friends, Nigerians, some who had been living in Europe for more than 7 years and more.

And I realized it wasn’t a me-thing, most of the others feel that way too: that feeling of unfulfillment.

Some were already multimillionaires.
Some were married to Caucasian women and have bred beautiful bi-racial kids.
Some were in their 40’s and unmarried, rich but do not yet have legal resident documents, so it still feels like they are hovering.
Some live like they are very happy, and have made the nightclubs their second homes.

But upon communing deeply with them, I realized they all feel kinda out of place, unfulfilled, floating, with no sense of purpose.

And I coined a term for it ‘The Great Depression.’

And why do I call it great? This is why:

When you have everything you seem to need, money, certain stability, a seemingly beautiful life, financial security, but yet your life feels like it has a void, it feels like there’s something remaining even which the ease and tranquil of life abroad can’t give you, when you can easily send money to your siblings, parents and provide their basic needs, but yet, your spirit feels like a foreigner, like you do not really belong here, then that’s the Great Depression.

And I challenge you, if you have a friend or family member overseas, ask them this.

Three out of Five will acquiesce.

And then when you check deep down within yourself, you realize that the one thing missing in your life, regardless of all you’ve gathered and accomplished, is PURPOSE.
