Out now on EP35 of Campus Killings; the case of Joe Micalizzi

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is well known for its dedication to campus safety and student security. But its location in the city of Newark would show that no matter how tight security might be, there is always a chance for the worst to happen. And though crime in Newark was reportedly down in 2016, these statistics were meaningless to the family and friends of NJIT junior, Joe Micalizzi, who became one of the many victims of Newark’s violent crime in May of that same year.

Jillian Robbins was a troubled teen with a long history of mental instability. But when she lied on her military application and was accepted to basic training, her years of hallucinations and debilitating depression turned her military sniper training into a recipe for a mass killer. When she decided to fire on unsuspecting students at Penn State University, the quick thinking and brave actions of a Penn State Senior kept her attack from turning into a bloody massacre, limiting the loss of life.

But when the body of 25 year old Theora Hix was found in a field near the gun range where he often practiced, the truth of his relationship with Theora would not only be publicized across the newspapers of the nation, but a jury would convict him of the worst possible crime, and sentence him to death.

Episode 30 of Campus Killings Podcast is out now w/ 'The Monash Massacre'

On a normal October day in 2002, an international student walked into his classroom at Australia’s Monash University and shot four students and his professor. For a country that had already put incredibly restrictive gun laws in place a decade earlier, The Monash Massacre was a shock to the Australian public, and forced them to reckon with not just their gun laws, but the lacking policies and structures needed to support their international university students.

The University of Florida, the surrounding community colleges, and the city of Gainesville are gripped in terror for days as police work tirelessly to find the killer. Little did anyone know the weather would cause the murder of 18 year old Katherine Foster to become a cold-case for almost 30 years. But a determined detective, a tip from an AA sponsor, and forensics specialists at The Body Farm, would reveal that Katherine’s stone-hearted killer was someone very close to home.

Quebec experienced intensive social upheaval over the course of the 20th century, affecting everything from university structures to social commentary. In 1989, Quebec women were gaining more and more footholds in previously male dominated careers. And while the Ecole Polytechnique was at the forefront of female academic empowerment, one disgruntled young man was on a mission to eradicate feminism. In the span of twenty minutes, the enraged killer murdered ten women and injured several others for the crime of trying to graduate with degrees in engineering. In 1977, a graduate student named Sigrid Stevenson was brutally murdered in the performance center at the College of New Jersey. Over forty years later, her killer is still at large, and little remains of Sigrid’s memory. But while nothing but ghost stories haunted the campus for several decades, another student, Johnny Fiocco, would mysteriously disappear in 2006. His body turned up months later in a Pennsylvania landfill, and his family is still hoping for answers almost twenty years later.

Out now on Campus Killings Podcast Episode 20 (season 2 debut)
The case of Sami Josephson

On a Thursday in March, 2019, University of South Carolina student, Samantha ‘Sami’ Josephson went out to the Five Points district to celebrate her acceptance to Drexel’s Graduate School of Law. She called an Uber to take her back to the dorms, but the Uber never dropped Sami off on the campus. Sami vanished, her body turning up sixty miles away in the underbrush of a turkey hunting farm. As the case unfolded, it became clear that someone had posed as an Uber driver, and Sami had gotten into a car with an illicit killer. While her murder was tragic, her legacy lives on through new national rideshare policies and procedures under “Sami’s Law.”

Out now on EP 19 of Campus Killings Podcast; the case of Lauren McCluskey

University of Utah track and field star Lauren McCluskey had everything going for her. Until she met Melvin Shawn Rowland at a club, and started dating him. Melvin told Lauren he was just 28, and a college student like her. But he was really 37, had a child – and had done ten years in prison for a s*x crime. When Lauren broke up with Melvin, she started receiving bizarre and then concerning texts, and then the s*xtortion started. Lauren went to the campus police for help repeatedly, but her cries for help went unheard. On October 22nd, as she was on the phone with her parents, Melvin grabbed Lauren outside her dorm and shot her 7 times. The school had ignored all the warning signs – and Lauren McCluskey paid the ultimate price.

Please visit the Lauren McCluskey Foundation website to learn more about Lauren's story and how her spirit lives on with a mission to help campuses across the country remain safe spaces.

This is the final episode of season 1 of Campus Killings. Season 2 will debut in September 2023, make sure you stay subscribed to the show on your favorite podcast platform.

In 1966, Riverside City College student Cheri Jo Bates was viciously stabbed 42 times and nearly decapitated in an alley after leaving the school library. Police discovered that her car had been deliberately disabled, and concluded that her attacker had deliberately sabotaged it in order to get to her. The case was thoroughly investigated, but had started to cool when an anonymous confession letter arrived – claiming responsibility for the murder in great detail. Additional letters added to the mystery. And then, another killer dominated the headlines in California – a killer who also sent anonymous letters that bore marked similarities to the confession letter. Was Cheri Jo Bates the first victim of the serial killer who terrorized California in the late 1960s, who has never been identified – the Zodiac?

In 2009, pharmacology graduate student and soon-to-be bride Annie Le went to her research lab in the basement of a medical research facility at Yale University. She never left. She was finally found on her wedding day, stuffed into a tiny hole behind a wall panel in the laboratory building locker room. Investigators knew that her killer had to be someone with access to the facility – someone who, like Annie, was affiliated with Yale. And it was not long before they homed in on their suspect – a laboratory technician with no known relationship with Annie. What motivated Raymond Clark III to kill Annie Le? How was he able to hide her body – and much of the evidence – without attracting any attention during a busy school day? And – did an incident in his past foreshadow what he was capable of? Episode 16 of Campus Killings Podcast is out now w/ the case of Colleen Ritzer

In 2013, a shocking crime rocked the town of Danvers, Massachusetts. Colleen Ritzer, a beloved math teacher at Danvers High School was found savaged, r***d and buried under leaves off the cross country path behind the school. Police followed the clues and quickly apprehended her killer–a 14 year old student. Philip Chism had no record, no behavioral problems, and no known motive to kill his algebra teacher–but he followed Colleen into a women’s bathroom and cut her throat. The crime was planned, premeditated, and pure evil. And Philip wasn’t done–he would attack someone again before he was locked away.

Out now on EP215 of Campus Killings; In 1987, Penn State senior Dana Bailey was the victim of a man police believe was stalking her. He watched her from an adjacent building, and one night he scaled rooftops and climbed into her apartment and murdered her. Dana was found posed in a s*xually suggestive manner, and police believe her killer did this so he could enjoy his handiwork. Anonymous letters and calls from tipsters kept investigators busy, but police never had any good suspects in this case – every lead went cold. Dana Bailey’s case took a twist when the DA assigned to her case, Ray Gricar, went missing in 2005. He has never been found – and Dana’s case remains unsolved.

The 1998 disappearance of Suzanne Lyall, who was known to many as Suzy, is one of the better-known missing persons cases. Suzy was a studious and industrious student at SUNY-Albany who was abducted after taking a bus back to campus from work on the night of March 2nd. No evidence of Suzy was ever found again – except for the strange appearance of her work ID in a parking lot, and someone using her ATM card to withdraw $20. Suzy’s boyfriend was a prime suspect in her disappearance – but many have their doubts about his involvement. Another theory – that a mysterious serial killer was responsible for Suzy’s disappearance – has gained more traction in recent years. Did Israel Keyes abduct Suzy Lyall?
