On the 3rd day of our Bali trip we went to Nusa Penida. 🏝🌅Nusa Penida is an under developed island southeast of Indonesia's island of Bali and a district of Klungkung Regency that includes the neighbouring small island of Nusa Lembongan. The Badung Strait separates the island and Bali. Nusa Penida houses some of the most photogenic sights in Bali with beautiful cliffs and beaches. The interior of Nusa Penida is hilly and road conditions are bad, with a maximum altitude of 524 metres. Consider hiring a taxi. If you are looking for suitable Nusa Penida beaches to swim, Crystal Bay Beach is one of them, a name given by travelers because it offers crystal clear sea water, while local call it as Penida beach. 😎🏝

Nusa Penida is known mostly for Kelingking beach and the trek down to the beach, Snorkeling with Manta Rays, Atuh and Diamond beach, Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach/Angels Billabong, Sunset at Crystal Bay but you can still visit temples where the dark spirit is worshipped – and kept at bay. A day trip to Nusa Penida from Bali is very doable. You can get to Nusa Penida via a 30-40 minute speedboat ride from Sanur in the morning and come back in the afternoon.

Nusa means “island” and Penida means “priests” in Balinese. Therefore, isn’t necessary to refer to the island as “Nusa Penida Island” – it would just be redundant. The island is known to local Balinese as the black magic island. Long before it became a tourist attraction for its natural beauty, Nusa Penida was once believed by locals to be inhabited by dark spirits, banished to the island by the priests of Bali. However, even with such negative connotation Nusa Penida remains an important religious destination. This is because Bali’s spiritual belief dictates balance in the universe, in which both good and evil are necessary. 🙏👳‍♀️

We went to have lunch at Babi Guling Candra with Ade, our driver for the day. "Babi Guling" meaning slow-roasted pig or lechon🐷 in the Philippines. Each person’s set consisting of a plate of rice, suckling pork parts including the all-important crispy skin, 1 portion of vegetables and a bowl of soup, came up to under P375(USD7.50) inclusive of optional drinks (fresh coconut and/or avocado shake). 🤤👌👍 All-in, the dishes were on the spicy side, so do order the fresh coconut or avocado shake to calm the burning tongue. If you don’t eat pork you can opt for Betutu Chicken and that is great, too. Crowded with locals so you can take it as a good sign.

With a liberal use of spices and ingredients, The cuisine is similar to that found in the rest of Indonesia and, in some ways, Hindi cooking albeit with a few caveats. In Bali, you’ll see pork on the menu quite often, which is unheard of in the rest of Indonesia. Likewise, you’ll see that Balinese cuisine is very meat-centric, which is somewhat converse to many Hindi culinary traditions. Rice🌾 (nasi) is the most ubiquitous ingredient in Balinese cooking and most dishes will include it.

Some the best Balinese dishes are: Babi Guling – slow-roasted pig, Satay – grilled meat skewers, Betutu – stuffed duck or chicken, Lawar – minced meat and veggies w/ coconut, Urab – mixed vegetables, Tum – mixed ingredients prepared in banana leaves, Nasi Goreng – fried rice, Mie Goreng – fried noodles, and Tempe – fried tofu! ❤❤❤
