It may be April fools day for some but today is the first day of Autism Awareness and Acceptance month! While we have one month I encourage everyone outside of this community to ask questions to educate themselves, lend an ear without judgment, and realize anyone who is on the spectrum is deserving of any opportunity and advantage just like anyone else! We’re on the verge of what I refer to as “Triple A” or “Autism Acceptance and Appreciation” Month. I know that many of us have mixed feelings about the idea of dedicating a specific day, week or even month to Autism acceptance. We all know profoundly, viscerally, that awareness doesn’t go far enough. Also because acceptance is what we’re hoping to achieve, why limit the focus on this, to one month of the year?

Yet, the alternatives are no easier! We work all year round anyway. So, this well publicised opportunity to drag the myths and misconceptions so many people still believe about autism, into the sunlight of truth, while raising the profile of this crucial struggle, is not one that we can afford to miss.

Autism Acceptance and Appreciation Month is ours! Let’s use this opportunity to speak boldly about the things that matter most to us. And if speaking boldly isn’t your thing, that’s okay too. Chose whatever way you like best, to show your support for our amazing community. We’re doing so much more than raising awareness. We’re celebrating everything autism!

Not autistic and fancy being our Ally?

Remember these key things:

* Do not support Autism Speaks or Light it up Blue! 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾

* Go Wear Red and Light it Up Red ❤️ or 💛 instead

* Use the rainbow or gold infinity symbol instead of the puzzle piece. 🌈♾✨🌈♾✨

* Support organisations approved by autistic people eg. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) and the Autistic Women Nonbinary Network. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

* Validate and amplify autistic voices. We are the real autism experts! 🏆🏆🏆

* We do not want awareness and a cure. We want ACCEPTANCE, APPRECIATION, INCLUSION AND INVOLVEMENT. ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
