Read out loud. For you. For them.
I was in line at the post office when the woman next to me said, “You wrote that Edward book, didn’t you?”
“Edward Tulane?” I said.
“Yep. I read that book to my third graders this year and I couldn’t read the last chapter out loud. I was crying too hard. One of my kiddos stood up and took the book out of my hands and said, ‘I’ve got this.’ He read it to the class, and I just sat there and cried.” She shook her head.
“Wow,” I said.
“I know. It’s probably like my favorite moment teaching. Ever.”
“Thank you,” I said. “Thank you for telling me and thank you for reading out loud.”
“Oh, I would never give up the reading aloud,” she said. “It’s the best part of my day—and their day, too.”
Yep.
Thank you.
