We are made up of those we have loved, those who have loved us, and those we have lost. It is important to remember that our lives are the living testimony of these things, that even when our lives continue after others, that we are still shaped by that connection.

"I got overwhelmed with this idea that none of my information was firsthand. I just read it in books or heard it from friends and I was eager to just see something for myself. I kind of entrenched this philosophy that my memories are some of the most valuable things that I have.

These firsthand experiences, can't take that away from me. If I reminisce on a nice day then, you know, it feeds you. Remembering something is neurologically almost identical, I've read, to experiencing it. Any information is valuable. I call it expensive knowledge, right? It's like your buddy who's a war veteran. You don't want to know the s**t he knows if you knew what he had to do to know these things."

This is our list, although we are always reading more!

A Grief Observed: this book is a short, simple, and profound insight into the process of grief. Lewis wrote this directly after his wife passed away. At times heart-rending, at times hopeful, and filled with wisdom throughout, this is the best entry into understanding grief.

On Grief & Grieving: this book has become a classic in the genre, and for good reason. Kübler-Ross develops a comprehensive understanding of grief and how to walk with it.

The Year of Magical Thinking & Blue Nights: these books were written after the death of her husband and daughter, respectively. These books carry a sort of hallowed quality that is rare for books of any kind.

The Denial of Death: this book won the Pulitzer Prize in 1974 and for good reason. Ernst Becker talks about how our cultural understanding of death doesn’t prepare us for its inevitability.

What are your recommendations?

A quote from this amazing New York Times article:

We do have fuller ways of knowing. Who doubts that imagination and intuition and love hold power and capacity beyond what language can describe? You are a person with consciousness and emotions and ties. You live on in those you’ve touched, in hearts and minds. You affect people. Just remember those who’ve died before you. There’s your immortality. There, in you, they live.

Beyond fear and isolation, maybe this is what the pandemic holds for us: the understanding that living in the face of death can set off a cascade of realization and appreciation. Death is the force that shows you what you love and urges you to revel in that love while the clock ticks. Reveling in love is one sure way to see through and beyond yourself to the wider world, where immortality lives. A pretty brilliant system, really, showing you who you are (limited) and all that you’re a part of (vast). As a connecting force, love makes a person much more resistant to obliteration.

Chadwick Boseman was and is an inspiration to us all. Throughout his life, he championed the rights and lives of his people and never rested on his laurels. He was kind, gracious, loving, and fair. The world has paid a dear price in losing him, so don't forget him. Tell his story to your children, to your friends, and to anyone else who cares to listen. Wakanda Forever

Kevin would wake up early every day before work just to be with his son. He would take his son on bike trails, he wanted to be a soccer coach and teach his son how to ride a bike. To this day, Kevin still supports his family with a love that is beautiful and breathtaking: “even though he is no longer by my side, he still encourages me to be the best version of myself.” -

One of the best father figures in TV history. When James Avery passed away in 2013, Will Smith said "Some of my greatest lessons in acting, living, and being a respectable human being came through James Avery. Every young man needs an Uncle Phil. Rest in peace."

This is one of the worst parts of the pandemic, that people are unable to properly mourn and grieve the ones they lose. This is why the mission of this podcast and of Remember.us is so important, now more than ever. We want to help people get through these next few months as best we can, by empowering everyone to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones: those who have passed, and those we fear to lose.

This is one of the most powerful moments in the Harry Potter story. Throughout the breadth of her novels, J.K. Rowling speaks again and again of the power of love. This quote is a perfect example: it shows us that Harry was never really alone at all.

Lisa Miglietta is still encouraging and guiding her daughter Halley every day to stand up for herself and know her worth. Halley says "I dream about her almost every night, so it's really like she never left. That's really crazy. We have a very active relationship still. When I think about her, she feels really close because I see her every night in my dreams." The people who leave us never really do because love transcends all barriers.

Thank you for sharing your story, Halley!

When a loved one leaves us, it seems like the entire world is emptied out. Often, we underestimate how large their presence is in our life until they're gone. That's okay. That tells us that someone doesn't stop being important just because they've gone on ahead of us.

Episode 3: Halley remembers her mother, Lisa Inez Miglietta.

Thank you, Halley!

“Yonson, how are ya?” 😆 Jon’s grandmother never let go of her immense care and love for her family — or her sense of humor. Miriam is an inspiration and absolutely unforgettable, even to people who never knew her.

We'd like to invite you to contribute your own episode to the Remember Us podcast. The goal with this project is to start a movement of gratitude for the people we've loved and lost - the people that raise us, teach us, befriend us, love us.
