Angela Bassett, who plays Queen Ramonda in the "Black Panther" movies, recalled the week-long shoot in a 2018 interview with Stephen Colbert on "The Late Show." What could possibly make an established actor drop everything, agree to sign onto an incredibly technically challenging World War II drama, and do so without even having a fully-written character on the page to play? That was the circumstances surrounding Christopher Nolan's offer to Cillian Murphy in becoming part of the cast of 2017's "Dunkirk." Released in 1988, "The Killing Joke" remains one of the most influential stories in Batman history. "Watchmen" writer Alan Moore approached the Joker origin story as a way of demonstrating the similarities between the Clown Prince of Crime and the Dark Knight, ultimately helping popularize the now ubiquitous notion of the two being opposite sides of the same coin. The graphic novel influenced everyone from future DC comics writers to directors Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan, and famously contained the genesis of Barbara Gordon becoming Oracle, after she's shot by the Joker, who then takes pictures of his victim as she lies helpless on the floor....

The Cannes Film Festival, which will kick off Tuesday, is such a colossal extravaganza that taking measure of its ups and downs is notoriously difficult. It’s a showcase of the world’s best cinema. It’s a red-carpet spectacular. It’s a French Riviera hive of dealmaking. But by at least some metrics, Cannes — following a canceled 2020 festival, a much-diminished 2021 edition and a triumphant 2022 return — is finally all the way back....

“Padatik,” a birth centenary homage to Indian auteur Mrinal Sen, is in post-production and is aiming to launch at a major film festival this fall. The lack of romance in the third season of "Picard," it seems, stemmed from scheduling and the necessities of the plot. There were sinister plot threads that involved devious Changelings, and a mystery about Jack Crusher's developing X-Men powers....

In this new sequel film, it will now be in Rey's hands to make a decision that will shape the future generations of Jedi ahead of her. Taking into account all that we know about the timeline of "Star Wars" and the endless push and pull between the dark and the light, as well as what Rey has learned from Luke and his failures in "The Last Jedi," the most logical conclusion to Rey's story would be to abandon the old Jedi way and forge a new, healthier path....

If I were to count on one hand the most preeminent humanist filmmakers of our time, the first two fingers would have to be dedicated to Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. Bringing empathy and insight to stories of immigrants, outcasts and the working poor, the Belgian siblings have dedicated their career to observing characters Western society prefers to overlook. In that time, the brothers have screened every one of their 12 features at Cannes, collecting two Palme d’Or trophies — in 1999 for “Rosetta” and 2002 for “L’Enfant.” The Dardennes keep the prizes in the office they share at their Liège-based production company, Les Films du Fleuve....
