A little PSA about mental health

We are all aware of how mental health challenges effect those 𝒊𝒏 𝒊𝒕...

But we often forget to also educate those 𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 it as well...

In the world of living with a mental health challenge or disability, there are so many things that can drag one back into the “rabbit hole”, creating a spiral of first
*shame, then
*self loathing, then
*guilt, then
*shame again and finally....
*a full blown episode of depression or anxiety or panic attacks or unchecked emotions.

An “unhealthy” mind will continue to accept these triggers or things that remind them of their past and allow them to control their emotions and eventually their mental health...

A “healthy” mind sees the need to remove these things.... maybe temporarily, maybe permanently.... and is only focused on simply being and staying healthy, taking whatever measures are best for them...

It’s a đ‘·đ‘čđ‘¶đ‘»đ‘Źđ‘Șđ‘»đ‘°đ‘œđ‘Ź thing.
Not an 𝑭 𝒚𝒐𝒖 thing.

It’s not an excuse ..
But an explanation.

𝐀𝐧𝐝 đ‡đžđ«đž 𝐱𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐱𝐧𝐠.....You..too... have the choice as to whether you can be a part of this person’s life knowing they bow in and out from time to time ...you have your protective needs as well... and that’s ok....

But please try not to blame them or end it with anger because there are days where they’re just trying to survive and sometimes that survival means going “inside” for a bit

So...
To those around someone that may be struggling ... here are some tips and methods taught in

* if you have enough strength in YOU... check in when they’ve gone silent

*if you don’t ... that’s ok but contact someone who does to reach out to them (you don’t need to be Superman(woman) )

*please know that they can’t control when episodes come. They may miss a lunch for the 4th time or a wedding or special moments. They’re doing the best they can.

*please (this is a tough one) try to forgive the past if you see them making attempts to be healthy.

*laslty.... try to be patient.

I’ve been in the position where I’ve taken measures to alleviate “triggers” or (for people that hate that word) reminders of how they’ve disappointed or hurt someone.
I know it hurt.

I didn’t mean to hurt them. But to understand mental health and struggle takes education and awareness.

And it doesn’t erase accountability on my part once I’m back on the healthy track.

Why don’t we commit to learning one new thing today about depression or anxiety or panic attacks or manic episodes .... anything.

Working on a blog post about the Games that I might (someday) finish. But for now, I wanted to address the most important takeaway for me from the Olympics, because it’s the one I would have needed to hear when I was 18. I was only able to get to those start lines because I am healthy, happy, and have a loving and supportive team around me. Listening to my body and taking good care of it isn’t something I’ve always done, but getting help for my eating disorder and learning to accept my strengths instead of always trying to be “perfect” is why I’m still racing today.

The New York Times article that compared my body to the incredible women around me was harmful in many ways. So I want to be clear on this: as coaches, parents, teammates and friends, please, please do not comment on someone else’s body, shape or size.

Let’s keep the focus on the things that really matter - being a great teammate, mental strength, competing clean, training with purpose and racing with guts. The words we choose to say to one another can make a big impact, whether they are uplifting or hurtful. So let’s keep choosing to speak with kindness, whether it’s to a friend, athletes who look up to you, or to yourself.

Love my Ski Community Take Care of Each Other

Just after the resorts were closed in March of 2020, due to the first major COVID outbreak, I wrote an article about a resurrection fern (Found HERE), much of which is relevant still today. The story wasn't about a fern really, it was about resilience, grit and the power of community. I discussed how trauma is trauma and our response to it varies depending on the individual, but regardless, what we were experiencing was unknown and scary. At the time, I had a feeling we were in this for the long haul, but I don't think any of us could have conceived that we would still be in it, still holding our breaths about the unknown.

I believed then, that if we as a community banded together, we could get through anything and that would mean leaning on one another from time to time. While I have seen incredible acts of generosity, love, and support by much of our membership and member schools, I have also seen loneliness, sadness, struggle, and bullying. I have seen a division in beliefs that have ruined friendships and working relationships and caused many to feel ostracized. I have, in the wake of this, seen depression sweep through our instructors.

I had initially wanted to encourage you to eat clean, exercise and get sleep, but you don’t need my soap box. The reality is when this is all over; and it will be someday, it doesn't matter what side of the fence you stand on, what matters is how you treated one another throughout this. Everyone reading this, matters. So today, show someone they matter. Show someone you care; I promise it will not only make them feel better but you as well. And friends, don’t forget to breathe.
