In a coronavirus-free world, London would tomorrow be celebrating its annual Pride march. Half a century ago, at a rally in New York, Sylvia Rivera made a speech: ‘I believe in the gay power. I believe in us getting our rights, or else I would not be out there fighting for our rights.’ Many in the audience (mostly white men and women) booed her offstage. Throughout her life, Sylvia fought hard for these rights -- in the face of untold discrimination and racism. Without her sacrifices, and those of so many other q***r people of colour, the very idea of a Pride march is impossible to imagine. Today, we still face immense challenges addressing racism in our community. The Black Lives Matter movement has compelled many of us to reckon with this.
This video is intended as a message of solidarity from members of the LGBT+ community, with Black Lives Matter. We embrace the need to end oppression in all its guises, and undertake and support these efforts to the best of our abilities.
