Marketing your business can be difficult during the summer, if you're not selling a summer seasonal product or service. A lot of people go on vacation, and are focused on enjoying the outdoors and the many opportunities to explore and have fun. What's a business owner to do?

Being aware of our customers' lifestyle and engagement/spending patterns helps us plan accordingly. If you know your customer is checked out during the summer, then you can post content that is short, sweet, and doesn't ask for much in return. That way you keep in touch without spending a lot of time and energy promoting offers that may not be a timely fit for their needs.

Summer is a great time to plan your fall campaigns. It is a great time to work on your fall and holiday content, to think about what you will offer and go ahead and draft your posts and emails. Especially if you have a product or service that will have a holiday sale! These campaigns require extra time and effort, so go ahead and decide what special offer you will make. That will give you a little more breathing room to enjoy the holidays a little more yourself.

A newbie entrepreneur needed some clarity around what she should be posting on Facebook. She had a lot of ideas but didn't want to waste her time posting things that might not be what people want. She also was concerned she lacked an overarching strategy behind these posts.

Eventbrite is a tool that makes sense to use to promote your event if BOTH of the following apply to you:

A.) you do not have a website or do not have the ability to create an event registration page on your site
B.) you want to be able to promote your event with Facebook ads

It could also make sense if your event is paid and you do not have a payment processor.

If you aren't planning to run Facebook ads, it would be much easier to just make your Zoom "registration required" to capture the email addresses.

Just received a question and thought we would share the answer here in case it helps anyone else.

Q: How do I get a professional email address? So that I don't have to use my gmail address.

A: You have to register a domain in order to be able to do that. You can go somewhere like Namecheap.com and purchase a domain. We recommend using Google Apps For Business to set up your business email. You an do this without setting up a website on that domain.

You can have the best product in the world and still fail at business. You can have the best features, top of the line components, the most beautiful design, and be able to unequivocally prove it is the best with scientific studies. But unless you can find a small group of human beings that find value in the product, you don’t have a business. You may have a great research organization, but you don’t have a business.

That’s why, if you’re just starting out in business, before you set up a website, before you set up sophisticated systems, before you hire anyone, make sure you have established that there is a small group of humans who found your product valuable. Your customer is the one who decides your product’s value. If you’re not solving a problem that they know they have, then your product may end up being worthless.

It sounds simple, BUT MAKE SURE YOU ARE SERVING YOUR CUSTOMER! You can’t serve them if you’ve confused them with your messaging and they don’t know why they would need your product. You can’t serve them if you don’t listen very carefully to the words they are using to describe what they are needing. You can’t serve them if your product doesn’t fill a very real need or pressing problem that they are actively seeking solutions for.

Their words are gold for a startup. Interview them and seek to deeply understand why they needed the product, what they liked about it, what they didn’t like, would they buy it again or recommend it to their friends. What else did they try in the past that didn’t work as well? Record and transcribe those conversations, this is valuable data for your messaging. Your best copy is going to come directly from your prospects’ and customers’ mouths.

Do this before you spend money on advertising. Do this before you put a lot of time and money into a website and printed materials.

This chapter of your business life is the most important. This exercise will keep your ego in check. You may be an entrepreneur because you’re a brilliant product developer who has created this amazing technical or artistic work of genius. You poured your heart and soul into creating it and you didn’t settle for less than the best quality of everything. Your colleagues, friends, or family may rave about it.

Doesn’t matter.

Doesn’t matter until a small group of unbiased potential customers try it and confirm the value. Organize focus groups or one on one conversations with your potential customers. Put yourself in service of them. They are your teachers, your guides. If you listen closely, they’ll give you better marketing copy than the best copywriters.
