#2) Contract + Statement of Work
The idea of conducting business with someone new, especially virtually, can be scary. Unless we’ve already done business with a person or brand, we honestly aren’t 100% comfortable signing off and making that first payment to just anyone.
One of your first lines of establishing trust is their ability to present a professional contract with supporting SOW.
I suggest you start by reviewing both documents yourself. Typically a quick skim and you’ll quickly be able to tell if they’ve copied and pasted off of the internet or actually put in the time and money to create documents with an educated professional suited to their unique business.
Next, refer to your own counsel or trusted source as a second line of approval.
Once signature-ready, the documents need to be signed via a reputable cloud-based software such as HelloSign or DocuSign. Not only are both parties able to sign in a user-friendly manner, but both have created an electronic impression which will better-stand in court should the unfortunate ever arise.
Just like carrying business insurance, ultimately the choice is yours. But even in the instance of a friend or family member, it’s always best business practice for both parties to fully execute a contract and SOW no matter what.
