South Hills area news briefs include pierogi sale, holiday events and more.

St. Pius X Byzantine Church, located at 2236 Brownsville Road in Carrick, is selling frozen potato cheese ($11 per dozen, $6 per half dozen), cottage cheese ($15 per dozen, $8 per half dozen) and sauerkraut pierogis ($12 per dozen, $6 per half dozen) on Dec. 12 and 19.

TJ improved to 5-3 to trail Seneca Valley, Peters Township, Central Catholic and North Allegheny in the 3A standings.

The Jaguars’ team leaders offensively included Blose with seven goals and 11 assists, Lorenzi (7 goals, 5 assists), junior forward Michael Burns (6 goals, 5 assists) and Simon (3 goals, 7 assists).

“I saw an opportunity to contribute to a program where I am a community member,” Marc Allemang said. “I am a resident of Jefferson Hills and live less than five minutes from the high school. I have been coaching at the youth level in TJ for about five or six years with my son and his teammates, so I know a lot of the kids and families."

“We are going to surprise a lot of people this year,” Baldwin coach Jamal Woodson said. “We have almost everyone coming back from last year and only lost one starter. Last year, we took a huge turn midway through the season and won a lot of our games. We are always the underdog, and everyone always counts us out and, honestly, that’s just the way we like it.”

Baldwin wrapped up its 2024-25 schedule 16-11 overall after advancing to the WPIAL Class 5A quarterfinals and PIAA first round.

The Jaguars were 12-1 in the first week of January and 17-2 late in the regular season, then won four of six playoff games.

TJ’s chief nemesis last year was rival Peters Township, which defeated the Jaguars twice in Section 4-5A play and twice in the postseason.

TJ advanced to the WPIAL semifinals and PIAA second round a year ago, losing to Peters Township by three and four points in the two games.

Baldwin landed the WPIAL’s No. 2 seed for the WPIAL playoffs but was shocked by No. 15 Penn-Trafford, 60-45, at home in the opening round. P-T advanced to the WPIAL quarterfinals and PIAA first round and ended up 14-13 overall.

These girls have been working very hard and with a lot of dedication and willingness to push themselves to become better,” coach Rachel Thomas said. “We see improvements with them individually and as a team every day. The stereotype — that those who live in the North Hills or South Hills never move to the opposite region — has some merit to it. The two regions have their differences, said Caroline Barrett Douglass, Realtor for Realty One Group Platinum.

The North Hills is marked by slightly newer homes, properties with larger yards and big box stores and national chain restaurants lining McKnight Road, she said. The South Hills is known for its historic homes, walkable communities, breweries and boutique retail.
