Epic's 2020 Holiday Sale kicks off with daily giveaways and 'unlimited coupons' 😱

Get an automatic 💲10 discount on every game selling for 💲15 or more.

The Epic Games Store's Holiday Sale 2020 is now underway, featuring discounts of up to 80% and the return of "unlimited" 💲10 coupons—you get one to start things off when you log into your account, and then more for each eligible purchase you make. Also: free games.

The 15 Days of Free Games event sees Epic go from weekly giveaways to daily, beginning alongside the start of the sale today with the outstanding city builder Cities: Skylines. Each game goes on the block for just 24 hours, so grab the ones you want when you see them.

A few sale highlights to consider include:

To make browsing and buying a little easier, Epic has also added a couple of new filters to the store, including "Holiday Sale 2020" and "💲14.99 and above," that being the minimum purchase price in order to be eligible for coupon use.

The free games will roll out every 24 hours (switching over at 11 am ET, for those watching the clock) until January 1, while the Epic Store Holiday Sale 2020 is live until January 7, 2021.

Update: The 💲10 Epic Store coupons are only supposed to be eligible for full game purchases, but due to an oversight some customers have been able to put them toward DLC or add-on purchases as well. If you're one of these customers, all is well—you bought it, you keep it—but now that Epic has noticed, it's flipped the proverbial switch and the coupons are no longer applicable to anything but games.

If you have already purchased DLC or add-ons using your 💲10 Epic Coupon, don't worry - those are yours to keep. However, we did flip that switch we mentioned, so users will no longer be able to purchase DLC or add-ons using the Epic Coupon.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMO likely coming in 2022 🤩

The release window details come due to a business acquisition disclosure.

The free-to-play Lord of the Rings MMO co-developed by Athlon Games and Amazon, to be published by Amazon outside of China, looks to be coming in 2022. Athlon Games is a subsidiary of Leyou, which was recently acquired by Tencent, and disclosure documents filed as part of that acquisition have revealed the game—among others from Leyou—is "expected to be launched from Q4 2021 to Q1 2023. In short, expect the new Lord of the Rings MMO in 2022 on PC. It's supposedly set long before the book trilogy. My money's on Angmar.

If it does, that'll really put a real cramp in our Rich Stanton's style, since when Athlon was looking for a Senior Artist early last month he bemoaned of ever seeing the game if they were hiring such crucial team members only now. He ended up promising that "if this releases before I croak, I'll eat my own ring of power." Start looking up ring recipes, Rich.

That said, 2022 isn't much new to go on for what the game will be like. Though it was announced as in-works in 2018, and Amazon revealed as the unnamed development partner for Athlon in 2019, that's about all we know. We've no idea what the quality of the game will be, too, since neither company has an established and/or good track record on development to date. Meanwhile, the already-extant free Lord of the Rings Online will get a visual overhaul ahead of Amazon's upcoming Lord of the Rings TV series.

Cyberpunk 2077 has over a million concurrent players on Steam
(A new 🏆record🏆 for a singleplayer game)

Fallout 4 previously held Steam's record for most players in a singleplayer game, with 472,962 people playing Bethesda's open-world game at launch in 2015. Today, Cyberpunk 2077 blew right past that and kept going, with 1,000,297 concurrent players at the time of writing [Update: It peaked at 1,003,264, and is now drifting back down]. Of course, with CD Projekt's new RPG available on GOG, Epic, GeForce Now, and Stadia as well as consoles, the true number of people exploring Night City at the moment (or at least, trying to) is even higher. There are a million people watching it on Twitch too.

The current overall record for the most players in a game on Steam was set by PUBG, with 3,257,248 people simultaneously chasing a chicken dinner on January 13, 2018. But Cyberpunk 2077 has already surpassed Terraria's peak of 489,886 and is catching up on Dota 2 (1,295,114 players) and CS:GO (1,308,963 players).

By the way, if you're still looking at Steam's download speeds in despair right now, it might just be that servers are overloaded in your locality. Go to Steam>Settings>Downloads and switch your download region to somewhere on the other side of the world. You're welcome 😉

Yakuza: Remastered Collection and Yakuza 6 are coming to PC 😈

It's finally happening: every mainline Yakuza game will be available on PC by April next year, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio announced today. The Yakuza: Remastered Collection, which includes Yakuza 3, 4 and 5, will release on PC (Windows 10 and Steam) on January 28, while the final story in Kazuma Kiryu's saga, Yakuza 6, will release on March 25.

Yakuza games have long released exclusively for Sony consoles, but that's quickly changing: Yakuza: Like A Dragon released on day one for PC (and Xbox) last month, while Yakuza 0, and the remakes of Yakuza 1 and 2 are also now available on PC. Come March, you'll be able to play from Yakuza 0 through to Like A Dragon without a console, which is extremely good news.

Even better, the three games in the Remastered Collection will all be sold separately. You'll want to play them all—they're all connected—but if you only play one, Yakuza 5 is essential.
The four new ports are also coming to Xbox Game Pass. It's unclear whether this is just the Xbox pass or if it'll come to the PC subscription service too, but frankly, it's good news that these games are coming to us at all.

Last news about backwards compatibility

Sony has said the "overwhelming majority" of PS4's 4,000+ games will be playable on PS5.

This was confirmed with a list of games which won't work on PS5, rather than those that will, making it simple to know what works at a glance.

There are some caveats to PS5 backwards compatible functionality, but in short, every PS4 game but the following should work on PS5:

- DWVR
- Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
- TT Isle of Man - Ride on the Edge 2
- Just Deal With It!
- Shadow Complex Remastered
- Robinson: The Journey
- We Sing
- Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
- Shadwen
- Joe's Diner

This means if a game isn't listed above, it will be playable on PS5. This includes PSVR titles and those which require the use of PlayStation Move, or the PlayStation Camera - though the PS5's own HD Camera will not work with PS4 games.
