When we start a business we often have a reason for starting it. You may believe its a financial decision but its not, its actually a very different reason.

Some may decide to start their business to escape  the 9 to 5, some dont want a boss or manager, some just want freedom and hate repetitiveness and others may just be extremely creative that their job does not allow them to express their ideas at work. There are many different reasons we start a business and the finances are often a by product of our real reason.

Along the way it helps to ask ourselves "is it all about me?" Am I pursuing or running this business for me or for others? Its crucial to review growth and goals at each stage so we remember our intentions, reasons and drive.

Why are you running your business? Is it for you, for your family, for your community? Or is it to make a change for the whole world?

Today mark's the Gurpurab of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Maharaj, the 6th Guru of the Sikhs. Sri Guru Hargobind Ji was the Guru from 1606 to 1644.

Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Maharaj wore two swords, one on his left side and the other on his right. He declared that the two swords signified "Miri" and "Piri", "Temporal Power" and "Spiritual Power". One would to deliver a powerful blow to the oppressor and the other would protect the innocent.

What culture do you come from? And what does your culture teach you about business?

When I ask these questions I dont mean culture as in your ethnicity, I mean the culture you have created within your social circles, networks and friends. Are you around people that support you to open a business? People that help promote your business? Or around people that think business is too much work or a bad idea?

From a psychological perspective our environment and peers can play an important part in our decisions and choices. Therfore, if is vital we have the right culture around us when starting or pursuing our business.

Being an entrepreneur or business owner can also be a lonely path as many may not understand the struggle, pressure's or concerns, which can leave us isolated. Therefore, our culture or network is equally important for our wellbeing and productivity as well as our decisions and choices.
