A little recap of the live Missing Links show a couple of weeks ago. A big thank you to everyone who showed up or listened on WISR and also to Missing Links Brewery - it was a fantastic time!

I'll be back out and about in the community a few times more this summer - at the Parts-A-Rama over Fathers Day Weekend and also back at Missing Links DJing a car cruise later on in July. More information about both events coming soon!

I dig almost everything I've ever heard of his, but "Straighten Up & Fly Right" is extra special and the perfect way to kick this set off!

Apparently Butler dug Cat Stevens - this well-loved 45 is from either WISR or WBUT's collection. There's not much music left in those grooves...

In Pittsburgh, "Morning Has Broken" spent two weeks at #12 in June of 1972 on KQV. Nationally, it was his biggest hit (tied with his cover of "Another Saturday Night") peaking at #6 in '72.

Interestingly, Rick Wakeman (of Yes) arranged and played the piano on this classic hymn.

Some Saturday fun from the Stax O' Wax Network:

Head back to 1963 and radio from Johnstown PA. This is a nice example of small-market radio in that era. Relatively laid-back presentation, local news, the "jock" reading the announcements live on the air, etc.

You might notice that some of the same jingles used here are also featured on the Stax O' Wax Show... Pretty neat-o!

We lost the last original member of the Moody Blues, Mike Pinder, yesterday.

The group's keyboardist, Pinder was crucial to the sound of the Moodys. In fact, he began incorporating the Mellotron (a special keyboard - more on that tomorrow on the show) into their music as early as 1966 and introduced it to John Lennon who would go on to feature it prominently on "Strawberry Fields Forever" the next year.

I've been working on a tribute to Pinder to feature in the 5:00 hour of the show tomorrow...

Pittsburgh Music Spotlight:

Pittsburgh group the Fenways scored a #1 record with "Walk" in the 'Burgh in March of '65 on KQV & KDKA. KQV ranked it as one of the top tunes of the year.

The Fenways would enjoy more regional success later in the decade as the Rackquet Squad with tunes like "Hung Up."

I've been enjoying the "new" sound of 13Q with Mark Driscoll this week. Pretty cool that WISR is now a sister station to 13Q (now back to its heritage WJAS call letters).

This station was THE sound of Pittsburgh from 1973 to around 1980. Classic top-40 radio minus the jingles.
