Adam and I broke up 3 years ago after 5 years of dating. The breakup was sudden and painful on his part, and I never truly understood why. Even now, I haven't been able to forget him, while he moved on and started dating my friend about a year ago. I've seen their happiness all over her social media. Recently, Adam's mom called me out of the blue. We never really got along, so I was shocked when she invited me to her wedding. To make it even stranger, she emphasized how much she admired my work as one of the best seamstresses in the city. She wanted me to design and sew her wedding dress. The request was shocking, flattering, and extremely uncomfortable — I knew agreeing would mean facing Adam. But she begged me to at least make the dress and deliver it to her on her wedding day. Reluctantly, I agreed. On Saturday, I drove to the venue with the dress in hand. But when I stepped inside, I froze. She'd LIED. After this situation, I'm not sure if I feel like a winner… or a monster. My husband's sister, Lara, has always been a lot. While we're both quiet and chill, she's more like… 110% energy and chaos. She's always been extra and raised the family to keep up, acting like her constant activity makes her somehow better. And honestly, that would be fine, but she doesn't exactly accept that my husband Patrick and I are more… low-key. Instead, she constantly mocks us, ropes us into stuff we hate, and makes us out to be total killjoys when we refuse. So, there we were, bracing ourselves for yet another family dinner at her place. I was mentally prepared for the usual pressure and snide remarks, but things seemed to be going well, and I thought maybe we'd make it out unscathed. It started on a Tuesday. You don't expect life to unravel on a day as mundane as a Tuesday, but there I was — arms full of groceries, stepping into a drizzle — when I saw her. She sat on the curb outside the grocery store, cradling a baby wrapped in a faded blue blanket. She looked mid-twenties, with hollow cheeks and storm-filled eyes. A mother's desperation is an awful thing to witness. "Please," she whispered as I passed. "Anything helps." I never give money to strangers. But that day, I hesitated. Maybe it was her baby's quiet, resigned face that reached into my chest and pressed hard. I handed her $50. Not a fortune, but enough for a meal or warm clothes. She blinked up at me, stunned, before whispering a trembling, "Thank you." The next morning, I brought flowers to my husband's grave. Time had dulled the grief, but I still visited weekly, always early, when the cemetery was empty. Except this time, it wasn't. There she was — the woman from the curb. She knelt beside my husband's grave. When I saw what she was doing, I froze. My breath caught in my throat as I watched her. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Thanksgiving used to be my favorite holiday. It was all about family for me. Year after year, we’d gather around, cook a turkey, and laugh until our stomachs hurt. I remember those moments like they were yesterday... But three years ago, my mom left us. No explanation, no goodbyes—she just closed the door and was gone. Since then, nothing has been the same, and I haven’t seen her since. We learned to live as three: my dad, my sister, and me. Dad did everything he could, but the holiday spirit never really returned. This year, she invited us to spend Thanksgiving together for the first time since she left. Honestly, it felt like a knife to the heart. To sit there and watch her so happy without us? It felt like punishment, not a celebration. But my dad insisted, so there I was, sitting in the car, dreading the moment we’d finally see her. When we arrived, the door swung open, and there she was. She looked the same, with that familiar smile and her chestnut hair. As soon as I stepped into the house, it was like the "holiday" had officially started. He was the sweetest guy I'd ever met, so everything seemed perfect until about ten minutes later when I got a notification. A short message form a stranger: "YOU MUST RUN FROM HIM. NOW" My heart started racing. I clicked on the profile, but it was completely blank—no pictures, no posts, nothing to indicate who this person was. My mind raced with all sorts of terrifying thoughts. Before I could even think of showing Mark, another message popped up: "Behave as usual. Meet me at Bayou Bakery tomorrow at 2 p.m. I'll give you the evidence. Don't tell Mark. Make up an excuse." The next day, I sat in the bakery, and FREAKED OUT when I saw the person who came to me. ⬇️
