Happy Birthday to Canadian film legend David Cronenberg.

On this episode, we discuss Videodrome (1983). We talk about how it seems like a film about the internet, try to suss out what Cronenberg's politics are, and talk about the changing media landscape from its release in 83 to today. We also discuss James Woods, the way Toronto is perceived vs how it is depicted in this film, Disney Channel Originals (you know Rebecca is on an episode when...) and try to figure out what Jewish summer camp Cronenberg went to.

This is the first episode with four people (Ian, Rebecca, Jacob & Duncan), the first appearance of friend-of-the-pod Duncan Chalmers, and the first episode not to be edited by Ian. Hope you enjoy!!!

Okay, now this is epic. Rebecca is back for another dive into the world of mid 2000's comedy with the Much Music TV show Video on Trial.

We talk about how grating this show is to return to (or in Jacob's case, be introduced to) in 2021. Discussions of the Toronto comedy scene, a "Where Are They Now" for jurors like Debra DiGiovanni and Nicole Arbour, and much more inside.

Josie makes her long awaited return to the pod to discuss Denis Villeneuve's 2013 mind-bending Toronto doppelganger movie, Enemy. We discuss the brutal architecture of Toronto and its legacy in mind bending horror cinema, the way Villeneuve balances filmbro cred with an interesting take on gender, the film's odd theme of dictatorship and the way it relates to a certain Ottawa sculpture, and finish with an ode to the honorary queen of cancon Sarah Gadon.

And we're back.

https://homewoodresearch.org/get-involved/make-a-donation/

This episode features the inimitable Rebecca Alter and your usual hosts, Jacob and Ian. It begins with Ian putting on his producer hat in to contextualize our far-too-long hiatus. We discuss two movies that are strangely by the same director: Black Christmas, and A Christmas Story. If you're still craving a little bit of that Christmas cheer, this is the extremely late episode for you.

Another episode with just the boys: Rebecca was busy keeping Vulture's lights on during American Thanksgiving Weekend.

This episode is our first dedicated music episode, and in typical fashion we go at the stuff that ticks us off. Bachman Turner Overdrive? In our sights. Rush? Get 'em outta here. We talk about why Canadian Dad Rock can be so mediocre, Ian mixes up Americans and Canadians a bunch, and Jacob comes out with about 1 hot take a minute. Hope you enjoy Aux Gang

URGENT CALL TO ACTION:

This week we are highlighting The Open Door https://www.opendoortoday.org/ways-to-support/.
They are a Montreal based charity providing aid to the unhoused community in Montreal and they are in particular need of aid right now due to tents and clothing being taken away from unhoused people in Milton-Parc. This episode is about how hard winter is on us, people who live in homes with heating, it's hard to imagine how difficult things are right now for people without a home.

Winter has set in, snow is falling, and everyone is feeling it. Rebecca was super busy this week, and both Ian & Jacob have been feeling those Winter/Quarantine blues kicking in. That makes this a less structured episode. We talk about finding things to cherish within winter, check in with each other on our struggles, and discuss delicious winter treats. We talk for a long time about our feelings about the pandemic, public vs individual responsibility... entirely possibly showing our asses but it comes from an honest place. We also begin the episode with a long overdue apology section. Hope you enjoy.

Producer's Scheduling Note: I've decided to release episodes on Wednesday from now on, we usually record over the weekend and Tuesday gets a bit dicey.

Featuring music by The Lifers! Check them out at https://thelifersmusic.com/ or on Facebook.

In this episode, we discuss the legacy of McClean and the Vinyl Cafe. Ian tries out his not-spot-on impression of Stuart McClean. The gang discusses the similarities and differences between our beloved show and A Prairie Home Companion down south. Jacob shares his experience encountering the show for the first time. Rebecca shares a great capsule review of the ‘06 Prairie Home Companion movie. A nice, short, cozy ep. Wait until the end for a Dave & Morley story featuring a situation we feel the late McClean would have for sure done at some point had he not passed away.

Part 2 of the Canada Transportation episode. The gang all swap travel stories. In this part, Ian gradually horrifies Rebecca & Jacob with his succession of chaos travel stories, and explains the small field of entropy he has around him that leads him to a storied but uncomfortable life. Jacob tells stories of being stuck on standby and some "airport secrets" from his pilot father. Ian also explains his inexplicable inability to distinguish between several Hollywood actors who do not look that much like each other. Rebecca's jokes are killer throughout and her closing story takes us home. This is the kind of fun, joke-focused you can expect to make up bonus episodes.

Also: our new logo is drawn by Alexa Hawksworth, and if you are in Montreal you can see her work opening on November 26 details here: https://www.picturamtl.com/projet-casa/digital-natives?fbclid=IwAR0aYhpEsYsZKB8qq-QeKfrR3_wlYitrEufdZCYqQytFytbgTY_lRPfRlgc

Schitt's Creek is a town of contrasts.

On this episode, due to our current anxiety about the election down south, we are promoting The Florence Project which provides legal aid to immigrants in Arizona.

This is a fun episode about the show Schitt's Creek and the first appearance of our new co-host Rebecca Alter. Our conversation was very free flowing this time, going from Canadian Fast Food, to the CBC, to Canadian TV, to Q***r Issues, to Rural vs Urban issues and more. Hope you can enjoy it while refreshing the New York Times, Google, and Decision Desk HQ

October 20, 2020

Letterkenny: a land of contrasts.

This one's a corker: we brought fellow quarantined Montreal-er Josie Teed to join us in riffing about the first Crave Original Series, Letterkenny. Featuring bad Canadian accents, Ian awkwardly claiming himself as The Universal Canadian, incredibly hot takes in terms of what the show can be compared to, and general discussion of all the weird ways both Letterkenny and White Male Podcasters try to handle problematic topics.
