Happy Launch Day!! 🌊💿

We hope to see you tonight at Beckwith Recital Hall. The concert starts at 7:30pm and there will be a reception following the show where you'll be able to buy some one-of-a-kind items!

This concert is free to all UNCW and CFCC students. $15 for the general public.

Last but not least, the digital controller ensemble, aka Dissonance! 💥

In the UNCW digital controller ensemble, students create and perform music using iPads, MIDI controllers, and computers.

Each semester students work on interdisciplinary projects with local hip-hop artists, musicians, and community outreach programs while learning a variety of skills for performing popular music on digital devices.

“Act Up” was composed and performed by Hope Ingling, Crystin Williams, Carlos Aizcorbe, and Laura Waldeck. Lyrics were written and performed by Megan Pedigo.

Ready to meet Tanner?

Tanner McAteer is a professional guitarist from Barnesville, Georgia. Self-taught from age 11, he began his formal studies under guitarist Guy Unger at age 14. At age 24, Tanner began studying the classical guitar with Dr. Justin Hoke at UNCW.

After graduating from UNCW with a B.A. in Music in May 2020, he was awarded a graduate teaching assistantship under Dr. Douglas James at Appalachian State University where he received his master’s degree in guitar performance in 2022.

He now resides in Fayetteville, NC where he continues to teach and study the guitar as well as write and record original music which he performs with his band, The Number Nines.

You won't want to miss his performance this Saturday at 7:30pm!

Meet 1/3 of the Jay Killman Trio: Jay Killman! 🎸

Jay Killman has been a professional musician for ten years. He received his Bachelor's degree in music from UNCW in 2021.

He has professionally released two albums: Rene and Jay Nice Sounds Collection No. 1 and Jay Killman Cycles. It is "a concept album depicting the cyclical nature of the ups and downs of life." You can hear it on all streaming platforms and buy a physical copy at jaykillmanmusic.com.

Jay has studied and performed with many distinguished musicians including Joey Calderazzo, Ralph Bowen, and Isaiah Sharkey. Jay now lives in Durham and attends North Carolina Central University where he is pursuing a Master's in Jazz Composition.

The Jay Killman Trio features Natalie Boeyink on bass and Jon Hill on drums.

Next up... Gwen!

Gwen Edwards graduated from UNCW in Spring 2022 with a B.A. in Music Technology.

At UNCW, she was a part of several ensembles, including Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, and the Digital Controller Ensemble. Her primary instrument is piano, but she also plays flute and is a singer-songwriter.

During her teenage years she frequently performed in recitals and was awarded first place in the J.S. Bach Competition for four years in a row. She has produced, recorded, and released several original songs on all streaming platforms. It was this hobby that sparked the interest for her to study music technology at UNCW.

She studied piano with Dr. Barry Salwen and Mrs. Barbara Furr during her time at UNCW. Currently, she is working for Live Nation concerts in the venue operations department. Her goal is to work as either a producer or work behind the scenes for live music events.

Meet Luís!

Luis Barragán-Higuera is a senior at UNCW pursuing a B.A. in Music. He started piano lessons while living in Spain when he was six years old; within a year he was admitted to a music conservatory and went on to complete the ten-year program of merit training.

In his time at UNCW, Luís has performed in the Department of Music Honors Recitals, and was twice awarded the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award for receiving the top score in Honors Recital auditions. He is also a recipient of the Mary Eunice Troy Scholarship.

In 2021, Luís won the collegiate division of the Richard R. Deas Young Artists Concerto Competition. He performed as a soloist in 2022 with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. Luís was recommended and selected to participate in Port City Music Festival’s Emerging Artists Program. He has performed at Doc’s Lab in San Francisco and Steinway Hall in New York City.

At UNCW, he has studied piano with Dr. Barry Salwen and Dr. Elizabeth Loparits. He is an instructor for Port City Music and coaches students in his home studio. Luís is currently working on recording Hildegard Publishing’s Black Women Composers in its entirety.

Let's talk about Megan!

Megan Pedigo is a senior at UNCW pursuing a B.A. in Music Education with a concentration in voice.

During her time at UNCW, she has performed in both the Concert and Chamber choirs under the baton of Dr. Aaron Pesiner. Megan is also a member of the group Dissonance, the first digital controller ensemble at UNCW.

Megan continues to pursue music outside of UNCW by songwriting, performing, and creating online content. Megan graduated from Brunswick Community College with an Associate in Arts.

Say hello to our very own UNCW Pop/Rock Ensemble! 🎸

In the pop/rock ensemble, students learn and perform popular music on electric guitars, electric bass, drum set, keyboard, and vocals in a student-centered ensemble.

Repertoire lists are created by students that span a wide range of popular artists for learning and performing popular music, while engaging with performance opportunities on UNCW’s campus and around the local Wilmington area. “Slippin’ Away” was written and composed by Joanna Bologna, Kinsey Boston, Thomas Dowler, Abigail Hamm, Bennett Hair, and Dawson Newman.

Teal Music Productions is releasing their debut album: Tealwaves 🌊

This album is a compilation of Teal Music Production artists comprised of current students, alumni, and faculty. The songs that are included on this album showcase the outstanding talent and diverse musical creativity of the featured artists.

Represented genres include classical, jazz, popular, electronic, hip-hop, and rock styles.

The songs on this album consist of award-winning original compositions along with exciting new recordings of existing works.

Meet Crystin! 🎵

Crystin Williams is a senior at UNCW pursuing a B.A. in Performance (euphonium) and a B.A in Music Technology. Crystin has performed as a soloist and with musical groups including large symphonic ensembles, small chamber ensembles, jazz bands, and British-style brass bands.

In her time at UNCW, Crystin has performed in five Honor Recitals, was a featured soloist on two OctubaFest concerts, and is a member of the UNCW Symphonic Band and Pep Band. She is an original member of Dissonance, UNCW’s first digital controller ensemble, and performed with the group at the 2021 North Carolina Music Education Association conference in Winston-Salem.

She was collegiate division winner of the 2021 National Association of Music Education Digital Composition Competition, with her original composition “Showing Color.” Crystin is also the recipient of the William F. Adcock Jr. scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year.

She is an International Tuba and Euphonium Association member, performs with the Wilmington Symphonic Winds, and plays tuba in the OLLI New Horizons Band.

Let's give it up for Crystin!! 👏🏼
