It's not easy deciding if counselling is right for you, but in order to protect yourself when looking for a Counsellor, it is absolutely essential to know that this industry is not regulated (shockingly). But there are ways to keep yourself safe, by finding only a professional, fully qualified Counsellor/therapist, to work with, here in Inverclyde.

Credentials are everything and thats not a couple of hours on an online counselling course. 🙄

Mental health is serious, life or death, in some cases, so it is essential for you that the person has done the correct 'long term' training and clinical placement work, before actually practising, or claiming to be able to offer you any support or therapy. It's not only about listening.

Organisations and companies please do your homework too, before contracting anyone to support the mental health of your staff, pupils, or employees.

Check any counsellor/therapist out. They should be working to professional standards, ethically registered with a professional body and insured as a counsellor/therapist.

Even a certificate course, including the Scottish based COSCA Certificate, completed over a year, is nowhere near qualified and neither are simple online diplomas.

A minimum of hundreds of hours of studying and academic training (480 of academic hrs in my case, plus 1000hrs studying, reading, updating CPD), with at least 100 supervised client placement hours, is required to be anywhere near qualified. This takes 2-3 years plus.

Don't be afraid to ask how long a therapist trained for and their qualifications. Too much is at risk, more damage can be done, if unprofessional and unskilled. It is unethical, unprofessional and dangerous for the client, as well as person claiming to be a therapist.

Any Counsellor/therapist will be only too pleased to tell you their professional body membership company, even if students (who may be on placement), so you can check them out too - they are required to divulge this to clients in advance.

Following great feedback and reviews for our various notebooks, we have launched editions with DOUBLE the number of pages, with two pages for each session. One full page for session notes and another page which allows for notes on actions required, inc Supervision and Counsellor's reflection - which is great to note for CPD, self awareness and for audit and accreditation.

The hours' log is still there and there have been some other minor updates in this edition, including each new session page being numbered to match up with the hours' log. There are also some blank pages to make any quick notes you need.

Student Counselling Notebooks now available on Amazon - currently with two different covers! 🎉🎉🎉

The notebooks have had some minor changes in design and layout - with this edition having DOUBLE session note pages - with one side completely for session notes. The other page has room for various action notes and reflection etc.

It now has 200 pages for 100 sessions, plus extra note pages and of course student guidance and the much needed HOURS LOG at the front, allowing you to quickly see where you are at with hours and supervision.

Upgraded notebook, without the student guidance will also be published shortly (just awaiting Amazon making it live).
