A gentle reminder to those who aspire to be social entrepreneurs from Doc Gel of Sureplus

As a social entrepreneur, you need to come up with comprehensive solutions to complex problems.

It will be more difficult. It will really take you out of your comfort zone.

You have to go back and see... if you're doing something with impact or if you're just doing something nice...

25/07/2021

In this episode of Disrupt Davao Podcast, I'm excited to talk to Doctor Angeli V. Guadalupe M.D., M.S.C, the co-founder of Sureplus Davao that started as a project at first and then launched as a business just last March of 2020.

Other Sureplus co-founders are Jason Occidental and Leizl Salera.

Others are quick to question their reasoning behind launching a business in this pandemic, but you'll be impressed and inspired after knowing their purpose and the vision they have for our city.

Sureplus is a social enterprise (won YSEALI Seeds) that aims to tackle the problem of food wastes & undernutrition in Davao City by reselling repurposing & reallocating surplus food in order to minimize food wastage & hunger in Davao City.

Through their website and upcoming app, excess food from local farmers, groceries, and restaurants is sold at prices lower than usual. Donations for food subsidies are also gathered then they are directed to specified individuals, families, and charities.

Listen in and learn more about Doc Gel and Sureplus. We discussed:

➡️What were some of the challenges they've encountered as a new business?
➡️What are the changes they've made that will stay after this pandemic?
➡️As social entrepreneurs, where do they get their support from?
What do they identify as Surplus food?
➡️As she's a doctor and entrepreneur, how does she balance and manage her time well?
➡️Great entrepreneurial advice and experience shared especially to those looking to start a social enterprise

How can you best support Sureplus?

➡️Shop at their website for surplus foods from farmers and their other store partners here: https://www.sureplus.net/
➡️Shop at their physical stores at the YMCA Cup of Grace - Kape ug Kaagi: Art & Start-up Hub - YMCA's cafe is located in front of Sutherland, near Bangko Sentral.
➡️Like and share their Sureplus page to your friends

As an avid podcast listener, I’m always on the hunt for new and interesting ones!

Podcast is a great resource for education, inspiration and good vibes. I have listened to many over the years and refer to them as my “pod-parents”. 😂

I love Sophia Amoruso, The Daily Stoic, Marie Forleo’s shows.

I’m currently listening to my new “pod-mom”, Michelle Obama and excited to have found her. She goes deep and beyond as she reflects on, not only her time in the White House, but the whole arc of her life.

What podcasts are you listening to? Which ones are your favorite?

And we’re back to recording!!

Although I have been doing this for quite a while, I still feel excited like it’s my first time every time I get to interview another Davao-based entrepreneur. I guess it’s about knowing that someone has been through the same journey, same challenges, and same rewards just as you. It’s knowing you’re not alone. And most important of all, it’s knowing I get to share their inspiring story with the rest of the world - no pandemic can ever stop them from solving problems, helping others, and living the life they want.

Looking forward to sharing them with you you very soon. :)

Stay safe, guys.

17/03/2021

I have been in and out of online meetings with different businesses and organizations and I (and most of my colleagues) notice people become more and more withdrawn and/or demotivated.

I guess COVID or pandemic fatigue is real. It’s been a year. And for most of us, this is a stretch. We’re all trying to keep up, stay guarded and anxious. It’s tiring. Not an ideal way to operate.

What I hear that most people do and get positive results is to go outdoors - get some sun, walk barefoot, sit, read, just do things outdoors with nature. Of course, still mindful of distancing and avoiding crowds. And, strictly no mention of work.

Tried it the past weekend and I got to tell you, I felt rested and excited to get back to work. A break from this 12-month mundanity is just what i needed.

I wish I had longer weekends though.. but I’ll take what I can get. 😀

10/12/2020

The thing about running a business is that sometimes your plans work out, but most of the time, they don't. At least not how you initially wanted them to be. There were times I felt everyone was against our work and our vision. It was one email after another that was full of disappointments.

As an entrepreneur, you'll tend to look towards yourself and put yourself down. You question yourself, your skills and your position in the industry. "What the hell am I doing?! This is stupid. I'm crazy for pursuing any of this."

But you know, over time, I've learned to accept that I AM probably crazy. It's not a bad thing to be out of your mind. It means you are being challenged as a business owner, and YOU are pushing yourself beyond this box because you know you have so much more to do and to offer.

The way I see it, our plans don't work out because THE WORLD knows there is no end to what we are doing. There is always room for improvement, and there's always another room to create and innovate.

Once I realize this, I need to get over my emotional moments and show up. And continue to show up in front of the next crazy thing I am going to challenge.

So cheers to all of my entrepreneur friends who are as crazy as us! 🤪 May you continue to do what you do best. We'll be here to support.

I had the opportunity to be the resource speaker today for University of the Philippines Mindanao (AgriEconomic Business) students. I shared my insights and experience on business pitching to investors.

Sharing you with one of the tips I shared to them:

The magic to pitching is in the prep work that you do. The amount of research, practice and exposure you have before the pitching day is vital to your success.

Have you tried pitching to investors before? How was it? Any tips to add? :)

Very interesting discussion about the pandemic and Chef Patrick's positive approach.

There is a lot of stigmas around the pandemic. One of the reasons why we want to get Chef Patrick on is because there are a lot of stories of people and businesses struggling during these times and understandably so, but his approach to the pandemic, through servicing our community has been one of the stories that we have loved and got our inspiration from.

Chef Darence Patrick Co is our city's celebrity chef and mastermind of Davao restaurants, The Fat Cow and Asian Cow, both by the way, landed on the list of Philippine Tatler’s T. Dining Guide as Best Restaurants in the country for 2020.

We talked about:

👨‍🍳How he got started and his love for food/cooking
👨‍🍳 Why the name Fat Cow?
👨‍🍳 His experience as a restaurant owner during the onset of the pandemic in March/April
👨‍🍳Some of the changes he made to keep running as a business
👨‍🍳The challenges he encountered as a restaurant owner ie supplies, raw materials, employees, logistics, etc.
👨‍🍳What's his favorite food and his go-to restaurant in Davao
👨‍🍳 Advice or insights he'd like to share with other restaurants owners in the city during these unpredictable times
