Donald Miller's Blue Like Jazz: Non-Religious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality (2003) is a collection of semi-autobiographical essays that explore the author's growing understanding of the nature of God. A classic text birthed from the emerging church tradition, Miller's book was divisive, controversial, funny, at moments irreverent, and persistently critical of the contemporary Church. Although Blue Like Jazz is ultimately a story about a man's "return" to faith, Teddi and Nick frame the text as an artifact that was, ironically, actually key to her (and likely many others') eventual deconstruction. Join us for a conversation about the emerging church movement, Donald Miller, and a divisive text that--whether intentioned or not-- might have helped a generation begin to reconsider their faith.

Hold back the milk, put down the sugar. We finally have the highly requested Newsboys episode! For those not familiar: the Newsboys are a Christian rock band founded in 1985 in Australia, by Peter Furler and George Perdikis. In this episode, Teddi and Nick talk about the band's development--from their 1980s emergence to their more recent involvement in the God's Not Dead films-- but dedicate the most time to this podcast's era, as well as to what many might say are the band's true glory days: the late 1990s-early 2000s. We ground our analysis in Shine: The Hits (2000) which features some of the band's most successful tracks, including but not limited to "Take me to Your Leader," "Not Ashamed," "Shine," and "Breakfast." We discuss what made the band markedly unique for music of the time--their silly, sometimes even absurdist style--but also address how they used that style to engage some of the most consistent concerns of the era, particularly the message that Christians have a duty to be a witness and bring the 'Good News' to a broken world. Join us for a conversation about one of CCM’s most beloved bands.

episode 9-- RELEASED TODAY! (Links below.)
"Oh God, I'm Captivated:
Stasi Eldredge's Captivating"

In 2005, Stasi Eldredge published Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul. The text was a companion to her husband's book, Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man's Soul, published four years prior. The best-selling companion series sought to help individuals and couples unearth God's "true" purpose for men and women. In this episode, Teddi and Nick turn first to Captivating, unpacking Stasi's portrayal of femininity and debating the theological justification (or lack thereof!) of the model of godly womanhood Captivating puts forth. Stasi repeatedly emphasizes that her approach is unique from other gender "guides" of the era, but how true is that claim? Join us as we discuss the ways Captivating both adheres to and contradicts the ideology of the time.

The phrase "What Would Jesus Do?" (now commonly known as WWJD) first became popular in 1896, when Rev. Charles Sheldon introduced the concept in his novel "In His Steps." Over a century later, the phrase had a resurgence in youth groups in the 1990s, and quickly made its way to the Christian market--most notably in the form of a simple fabric bracelet that would be worn by millions of Christians. The bracelet became a symbol of one's faith, a 'witnessing' tool, and powerful visual reminder of what it means to live by Biblical principles. In this episode, Teddi and Nick talk about the origin and development of one of the most recognizable and marketable Christian slogans of all time.

REMEMBER CARMAN?

Carman (1956-2021) was a music singer, song writer, television host, and evangelist. He was wildly successful, winning many awards and selling millions of albums, and was often regarded as CCM's "showman." His success--especially in the '80s-'90s--was in large part due to his highly distinctive sound and performance; his songs were often narrative-driven, long, theatrical, and spoken rather than sung. Upon his death, many rightfully noted that Carman wasn't afraid to be a 'star'; in the words of Tyler Huckabee for Relevant Magazine, Carman was undoubtedly engaging in a kind of "vanity project," yet this never appeared to compromise his message. In this episode, Teddi and Nick unpack some of Carman's most beloved songs, and frame him as a unique self-constructed Christian celebrity who simultaneously embodied and contradicted the Church's standards for Christian art.

In 1997, Joshua Harris released his book, I Kissed Dating Goodbye. Differing somewhat from other texts from evangelical purity culture, Harris advocated for a strict courtship model, arguing that Chrisitans should not only abstain for physical intimacy until marriage, but emotional and romantic intimacy as well. In this episode, Teddi and Nick discuss how the book convinced an entire generation of young Christians that dating was ultimately just a "training ground for divorce." Over 20 years later, the text is no longer published, and Harris has retracted his core message; yet, its impact still remains. In this episode, we chat about the book itself--breaking down its core points and analyzing its troubling representation of modern dating, love, and romance--as well as address Harris' later documentary, I Kissed Dating Goodbye (2021).

Rebecca. St. James released her sixth album "Transform" in 2001. The album was a huge success, largely because of the unique track "Wait For Me," which became an anthem for Christian women who aspired to "save" s*x for their future husbands. "Wait For Me" was one of the first highly popularized songs to engage the topic of s*xual purity and it was unique in that it pushed the artist's own proclaimed virginity into the spotlight. The song--which soon sparked a corresponding music video, book, and devotional--provided women with the hope of a Christian fairy-tale-- one that, contrary to the s*xual world's love stories, was defined by s*xual abstinence and traditional gender roles. In this episode, we frame the highly successful song as both a product of and catalyst for the "purity culture" that dominated American Christianity in the early 2000s.

In 1995, DC Talk released the song “Jesus Freak” on their fourth album. The album sold nearly 100,000 copies in its first week and became an instant sensation in the Christian music industry. Nearly 30 years later, it is still one of the greatest selling Christian albums of all time. In this episode, Teddi and Nick discuss 1990s Christian music culture, unpacking how the era both birthed and ensured its lasting impact. We treat “Jesus Freak” not simply as a highly successful song (AND album, book, music video) but also as a “blueprint” for the Church of the time – one that advocated for a new kind of defiant, radical, and unabashed faith that could bring hope to an increasingly fallen world. Join us as we excavate “Jesus Freak.”

We are preparing an episode about the infamous WWJD bracelet! We want to discuss what it meant to Christians of this period and what it might tell us about the era’s treatment of things like sin and temptation. Did you have one? Why or why not? Was there ever a particular time that the bracelet prompted (or pressured…) you to “live” more like Jesus? What are your feelings toward the concept now? Please leave a comment below OR, to remain private, shoot us an email: [email protected] ! We will draw on some of your stories in the episode (but keep everyone anonymous!).

Hi, everyone! This is Teddi and Nick—two 30-something friends who are educators, writers, and PhD candidates. We were both raised in fundamentalist Christian circles; we were homeschoolers and active members of our Pentecostal churches. Our faith and religious community defined our entire childhood and some of our early adulthood. A few decades later, we have each moved on in our respective ways, but we have, well… still a lot to think about.

This podcast is a product and extension of our many conversations about the Christian culture and ideology of our childhoods. Each episode will focus on a different major ‘artifact’ from the turn of the millenium: songs, books, events, products, and artists that were central to the unique fundamentalist Christianity of the time. Some of these things make us laugh; others make us sad. Some we never want to think about again; others we still hold with some sentimentality. For good or for bad, they made us the people we are today.

Ultimately, we want to sustain an open and honest conversation about the culture we grew up in. We’re approaching all these things respectfully yet curiously, critically yet lightly, and hoping to answer some of the questions we never had the chance to ask while in the Church. We really hope you’ll join us.

Episodes coming AUGUST 2022.
