Vegeta is very much a character created to be an avatar for Japanese Showa era masculinity.

What is showa era masculinity? The Showa era [ 1926 -1989] was an era in Japanese culture where the masculine identify was defined by being a tough, stoic and competitive man. Hmmmm that sounds familiar.

The Showa era was established during the time of Emperor Hirohito[1901 -1989] who was the longest reigning Emperor of Japan.

Dragon Ball Z would actually air its first episode in 1989, which was the last year of the Showa era. Which leads me to believe that Saiyans are very much a criticism or satire of the Showa Man. This is evident with the character Goku, who, while being a Saiyan by blood is very much a subversion of the Showa-Man, while his rival Vegeta is the embodiment of the Showa-Man. A movie about the generational disconnect of how Chinese masculinity is expressed. Wen Wu embodies old school Chinese militaristic
masculinity. While Shang Chi embodies modernity and is a reluctant warrior.

Funny enough, the term "Wen and Wu" is a philosophical concept in Chinese culture that is tied to the opposing nature of man reflected in war/military and civility being dichotomous within the male spirit. Shang Chi video essay coming soon.

So did y'all know in Predator (1987) one of the scenes with an iconic line wasn't going to make the cut?

Originally to stay within budget, the scene with Jesse Ventura as Blain telling Poncho (Richard Chaves) "I ain't got time to bleed" was going to be cut.

The reason why it wasn't? Arnold Schwarzenegger had gotten sick and was unavailable for shooting and rather than lose a day (and waste money not filming), production continued allowing the scene to be shot.

Sean Penn's portrayal of Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High is the inspiration for the surfer dude version of Michelangelo in the 80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series.

In the Mirage Comics Michelangelo wasn't like that, he was just...there.

But Sean Penn inspiring anything related to the Ninja Turtles is top notch information that I'm sure that would go viral if someone other than me shared this. Lol

The Green Arrow story Longbow Hunters being DC comics response to Frank Miller's run on Daredevil is what makes comics great. The character Shado is definitely built from the similar female assassin framework of someone who is adept in Japanese martial arts and tied to an urban left wing crime fighter [ Matt Murdock/Oliver Queen]

The parallels between Elektra and Shado are obvious and most definitely intentional.

Frank Miller's Daredevil is more iconic, but Longbow Hunters is equally great. And both definitely have traces of Manga influence.

So did y’all know (definitely gotta know) that Robin Williams was used as bait?

Robin Williams was offered the role of Joker in “Batman” as Jack Nicholson was hesitating to accept.

Robin had even accepted the role, when producers went back to Nicholson, telling him that Williams would take the part if he didn’t.

Obviously Jack took the role and the rest is history.

In the aftermath Robin, resenting being used as bait, turned down the role of Riddler in “Batman Forever” and also refused to be involved in any Warner Bros. productions until they apologized. He wouldn’t work with them until “Fathers’ Day” in 1997.

Sooo did y’all know (probably did know) that Mortal Kombat 1995 could’ve looked a little bit differently…

Bridgette Wilson-Sampras auditioned for the part of Sonya Blade, but due to the long casting process, she chose to do “Billy Madison” (1995).

Cameron Diaz was cast after the producers saw her in “The Mask” (1994). Through some twist of fate, Diaz broke her wrist while training, just before filming.

Fortunately, filming on Billy Madison had just wrapped, making Wilson available again. She happily took the role, being flown to the set the next day and learning fight choreography inbetween shooting the rest of the film.

Speaking of subversive comics, people rarely talk about how the MCU is built off The Ultimates which was political satire. The Ultimates was created in response to post 9/11 sentiments in fact, I would argue that The Ultimates is a diss to the Avengers comics.

The Avengers in the MCU is a para military response team who fight "foreign invaders" *ahem* The Chitauri. In the comics, prior to 2001...the Avengers were not that.

I've joked before that the MCU stands for the Military Complex Universe

But according to some, comics are apolitical and have never been woke or agenda driven. Smh

The past couple of years I've been trying to gather information for a career retrospective on 90s martial arts actor Ted Jan Roberts. I was actually trying to find him for an interview but ol dude disappeared from the earth. Someone reached out to me and told me he died, which as far I can prove...isn't true.

I actually have several pages for the retrospective written but I stepped away from the project to focus on less obscure videos. I'll probably drop the retrospective in a couple months, but I'm holding out hope that I can find him.
