Susanna leans into one of her more traumatic experiences with food, getting made fun of for having a smelly lunchbox. Now, Cantonese and Toi San dishes are a real source of pride. Susanna's website and Instagram page are full of dishes she grew up with. If you're from the "Village," you must check her site out and cook some of her yummy recipes!

Shout out to our mutual friend Norma for introducing us. Susanna was game to meet in person, so we had lunch and recorded at a new lunch court in South San Francisco, called the Hangar (not sponsored), if you're near Oyster Point go check it out!

Bonus Side Dish Episode! (Regular coming Wednesday)

We woke up early to join a press junket for the Filipino movie Hello, Love, Again! We had a quick chat with the movie's director, Cathy Garcia-Sampana. Direk Cathy is famous in the Philippines for directing some of the biggest rom-coms out of the country. Her 2019 film Hello, Love, Goodbye swept the nation and beyond, and became the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time (at the time). The film features two of the Philippines' biggest stars Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards. You can watch part one on YouTube.

The sequel: Hello, Love, Again, shows what has happened in the 5 years since Joy (Kathryn Bernardo) walks away from Ethan (Alden Richards). We don't know what to expect, but Direk Cathy says to put on your seatbelts and bring your tissues!

It premiers in select cities on November 15th, 2024. If it's in your town, go buy a ticket and see what finally happened to our favorite love team!

Thanks to Director Cathy and her team at the MRKT Co. for setting this up. Also thanks to: ABS-CBN Studios, GMA Pictures, and Star Cinema

It's time for our annual K-Drama Draft show! This time we went with a belated Halloween theme. We'll be picking dramas that have good villains, are a little dark, have an unexpected death, or are filled with blood, zombies or ghosts!

Joining Jennifer and me this week is Lia from the Afternoon Delight Podcast! Afternoona Delight is a fantastic K-Drama show where 3 romance authors break down your favorite K-Dramas and tropes. Please give them a listen wherever you get podcasts and follow them over on Instagram or find their webpage of the same name.

The teacher cohort is back with more Asian ghost stories! And this time... it's even spookier! Well maybe not, but we tried. Listen to the best Asian ghost stories Reddit has to offer, hear about Curtis' mysterious disappearing wallet, and find out if Sammo Hung's former residence is really haunted (spoiler alert: it is)!

Also included in this episode are: jets flying over at low altitudes, free legal advice, and tips for avoiding bad things during the Hungry Ghost Festival.

Thanks to my guests Jackie and Vicky! It's always fun to record "after school" with you guys! Shout out to Loan for doing her part in keeping the Asian American population growing.

Do you have an Asian ghost story? You can send me one and I'll read it on the air next year. Email us at [email protected], or give a follow or direct message on Instagram and Facebook

Hallyu means the Korean Wave, which is the nickname given to the phenomenal embrace of South Korean pop culture around the world! The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco is surfing that wave by bringing in a collection of pop culture pieces. Costumes from your favorite K-dramas, a recreated set from the movie Parasite, stage outfits worn by K-Pop stars, and much more grace the galleries in the museum.

I was lucky enough to meet up with the museum's Korean Art curator, Yoon Jee Choi, and she gave me an after-hours VIP tour. And lucky for you, I was able to record it, so you get to come along too!

The Hallyu exhibition is going on only until January 6th. So hurry and come down. The Asian Art Museum is located in the Civic Center of San Francisco. The days/hours of operation are Thursday-Monday usually from 10-5 PM, but on Thursdays, the museum is open from 1-8 PM. It's free to go on the 1st Sunday of every month. You can get a membership for under $120, which lasts a year and allows you to bring another person with you, so that's a great deal!

You can find out more over at https://asianart.org/ or follow their Instagram

Special thanks to my favorite curator Yoon Jee Choi! And thanks also to Freesia from the Media Relations Department.

Cooking survival shows are a lot of fun to watch, but are they fun for the competitors? Today Chef Dara Yu gives us a glimpse of what it is like. Dara first appeared on Master Chef Junior season 1, where she was the runner-up. After graduating high school and going to the Culinary Institute of America, Dara got a call from the producers offering her a 2nd chance on Master Chef Season 12: Back to Win. Armed with 8 more years of cooking experience, Dara came back from some early setbacks to win it all!

You can watch Master Chef on Fox and past seasons on Hulu. Follow Dara over on social media and find out about her pop-ups over

Life got a little busy, so no new episode this week. BUT, here's an episode from our first year that I really enjoyed recording. When Pachinko Season 1 came out, I jumped on a call with our pal Julia from the Asian Soup Podcast to talk about it. Jules was the perfect co-host because her family has roots in Korea and her grandparents lived for several years in Osaka roughly around the same time period that this drama takes place!

Season 2 of Pachinko is currently airing on Apple TV+. It is a gorgeously shot and well-acted drama based on Min Jin Lee's award-winning novel that spans 7 decades of one family's life in 20th Century Korea and Japan. If you can, you should definitely watch it!

Special thanks to Jules for coming on the show with me! It's hard to believe we recorded this over 2 years ago, time sure flies! Please go check out her and Roxanne's podcast wherever you get podcasts or on YouTube!

Etrike Karaoke is some of the most fun content on the internet. In it, Alanna Malicdem pedals up to people on the streets of West Hollywood and asks them if they'd like to sing karaoke on the back of her electric tricycle... sometimes it goes great, and sometimes it doesn't, but it's always a good time. Lately, she's been toting around some celebrities, including KPOP groups like Riize, BoyNextDoor, and P1 Harmony!

I wanted to hear more of Alanna's story and how she came up with this fun channel. She was a complete joy to speak with and I hope you enjoy hearing from her as well! You can follow her on Instagram and YouTube, and on Tik Tok.

We took our show on the road this summer. This time we ended up in Flushing, Queens in New York City, and there's no better way to experience a town than to have a local show you around! So we called up our podcast pal Lingjie who dropped everything to guide us to cheap and good places to eat! We disappointed Lingjie by only being able to eat at 7 different spots, but we had a good time! I hope you enjoy our silly Flushing banter mixed in with yummy food and lots of street noises!

Foods we at:

1) Steamed rice rolls (Cherng Fun) at Joe's Rice Rolls

4) A stop at Teso-X Claw Machine Arcade

5) You Tiao at a Zhu Ji Dumpling House

6) Tofu Fa at Soy Bean Chan Flower Shop

Go see DiDi! It will make you laugh, cry, and squirm in your seat a little as you get transported back to your own summer before going to high school. It captures the angst, insecurity, and awkwardness of being a 13-year-old Taiwanese American kid in Fremont California. Katie, Zoe, and I couldn't wait to get together to talk about this film. DiDi should be available at a theatre near you, but don't wait too long, you never know how long these films will stay in theaters. Go see it with your older sister, your first high school crush, or even your Asian mom (if you don't have one, go borrow one for the day)!

Thanks to my guest co-hosts Katie () and Zoe () for always being wiling to come and chat with me!

We played a clip of Paramore's "That's What You Get" off of their album Riot

Emily Kwong is the host of a fantastic new podcast from LAist/NPR. Inheriting is a show about Asian American and Pacific Islander families, which explores how one event in history can ripple through generations.

For those of us born in the 70's Star Wars was undoubtedly a huge part of our childhood. However, as Asian Americans, it was nearly impossible to see ourselves in the galaxy George Lucas created. This finally started to change in the late 2010s with some great characters in the films Rogue One and The Last Jedi. This summer, Disney+ came out with the Acolyte starring not one but TWO Asian actors as leads! We finally get to see an Asian Jedi as a main character! I couldn't resist doing an episode about season one of the series.

Joining me in the conversation are two bonafide Star Wars experts. They are both Asian American authors who have written parts of the Star Wars canon of books. We have returning guest Mike Chen who wrote Brotherhood in 2022, and Dr. Lydia Kang who wrote The High Republic: Cataclysm in 2023 (both Mike and Lydia have written other Star Wars short stories and numerous other books)!

It was so fun nerding out with these two super knowledgeable and down-to-earth people! You can follow Lydia and https://lydiakang.com/ and Mike and https://www.mikechenbooks.com/

Curtis, Nadira, and Jen get back together to talk about 2024 K-Dramas, coincidentally 3 years since we launched this podcast in June 2021! If we're being honest, 2024 hasn't been a great year of K-Dramas for us so far, but there have been some dramas that have made us laugh and cry... or both. We'll be talking specifically about An Atypical Family and Queen of Tears, and we'll comment on a few others that we liked or dropped.

As usual, thanks to my guests Nadira and Jennifer for chatting with me on the solstice!

If you’re looking for a summer read, look no further! Real Americans by Rachel Khong is like getting 3 books in one, it spans over 50 years and several countries from the perspective of 3 generations of a Chinese family. It asks the question, who and what determines who you are and what life you get to live?

Rachel was a complete joy to speak with, she’s currently based in LA but spent many years here in San Francisco editing the iconic food magazine Lucky Peach 2011-2016). She also founded a workspace for female and non-binary writers in the Mission District, called The Ruby. Real Americans is her 2nd book following Goodbye Vitamin (which we also recommend). Follow Rachel on Instagram, or find her at https://www.rachelkhong.com/

Co-hosting with me this week is our pal in Mississippi Sarah-Soonling Blackburn! You can follow Sarah on Instagram, and you can get a copy of her book, Exclusion and the Chinese American Story, wherever you get books.

There is a type of content on YouTube called "Catch and Cook" videos, where people catch fish and then show you how to prepare them. Most people who make these kinds of videos simply take the guts out of the fish, slap them in a grill or a pan with some butter and salt and pepper, and eat them like that. Taku, aka Outdoor Chef Life, has elevated the genre by producing amazing content with restaurant-worthy dishes that look as good as the taste! It was really fun sitting down and chatting with him for a little bit! He's one of the nicest guys too!

Taku's main platform is YouTube, where you can find him at Outdoor Chef Life, but he's also on Instagram . Coming shortly he will be publishing his first original cookbook, Coastal Harvest, so keep your eyes out for that, I can 100% guarantee that it will be full of delicious recipes for you to try at home!

Special thanks to Adam .hard.fishing for introducing me to Taku. And shout out to Super Producer Madison who did the editing on this episode! Thanks Madi!

April Kim gets one of the best seats at some of Singapore and Malaysia's biggest KPOP concerts! She's literally on the stage with the artists! April is a stage interpreter, who turns the artists' Korean into English for their fans. I noticed April when some videos of her interactions with artists like Taeyeon, CN Blue, and IU went viral! It really seems like the performers and the fans love April's ability to communicate the artists' intentions and feelings.

We had a lot of fun chatting about how April got into this career as well as some behind-the-scenes stories from the concerts! *Correction* During the last segment of the interview we got the surname of B**g Joon-Ho's interpreter wrong, her name is Sharon Choi, not Lee as mentioned during our interview.

Please listen to our episode #133 on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Would it surprise you to find out that many of your favorite KPOP songs are written outside of Korea? It might also surprise you to find out that a few of these Billboard-charting songs were actually written by a Canadian teenager! Today we're hearing from Toronto-based singer-songwriter Sofia Kay. Still in her teens, Sofia is an uber-talented artist who has been writing songs for about as long as she could write! Some of her songs have been performed by some of KPOP's biggest stars, like Twice, Girls Generation, and Tomorrow x Together! She co-wrote "Sugar Rush Ride" which has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times and has won many awards.

Sofia also writes and performs her own original songs that are so good and have been on rotation on my playlists for weeks!

You can listen to this episode wherever you get podcasts (Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube Music, etc...) or click the link in our bio.

Follow Sofia on social media or find her on YouTube or Spotify at Sofia Kay. Her lastest single, "Reinvent the Dead" is featured on this episode and will be available June 19th, 2024 on Spotify and iTunes!
