Opening Meet 2023 🩵

My favourite date in the calendar, and a day that this year, nearly didn’t happen, as 30 minutes before departure I noticed something not quite right with Laragh which meant fun and games were certainly off for the day.

After one *slightly* panicked phone call, I was thankfully given the ride of lovely Zack, who was a dream to hunt all day.

A rather radiant Laraghlee during a brilliant morning at hound exercise at Swanton Morely with the 🌞

I opted for a slight tack alteration after last week’s enthusiastic shenanigans, a simple noseband switch and we’ve regained some control 🥂

Red-faced & sweaty… but over the moon 🤩 Ember was a superstar today at Isleham PC 80cm Open Hunter Trial for his last pony party of the season 🌟

It was a tricky track, but he really shone today, I can really see the budding event horse in him now 🥹

On Friday I came into hospital with suspected appendicitis, turns out their suspicions were pretty correct, so after a few scans and tests they operated yesterday. Unfortunately there’s been a few complications which means I’m fighting a rather nasty infection. I’m hoping that the drugs and antibiotics will take effect sooner rather than later so I can get home.

Although my op to remove my appendix was via keyhole surgery, the doctors say I have to limit my activities for around 6 weeks, which means no riding plans for me after all ☹️

Huge thank you to and .x for stepping in to look after the horses, my other friendlings who have visited me while I’m being an invalid, all the lovely messages I’ve received on here and of course the staff at the QEH. I’m really lucky to have such a great support network to keep me sane 🤍

Hunter trial roll dump 📸 + essay incoming…

I was really in two minds about vlogging this event, as I knew that we were going to be addressing our cross country field napping problems face-on. This was always going to be a hard one to share to the whole world. Yes, I’m opening myself up to inevitable criticism, but at the end of the day, this is part of the gig.

Ember has been napping less and less. The more he is learning and understanding, the better he is getting. This is a positive step, but a step nonetheless. He is still a napper, and this needs addressing if he wants to be an Eventing horse, which I actually truly believe he would love so much. And, speaking as someone who loves Eventing as opposed to the obvious alternative disciplines, it’s pretty essential that we work this out together.

Myself and my trainer agreed that a pairs Hunter Trial seemed like the logical step for a nappy guy, he could follow the other horse in the worst case scenario. Well you can watch the vlog to find out if this actually helped or not 😂

My point is, I have always been totally transparent with Ember’s journey as an ex racehorse. The fantastic times, good, bad and the lil bit sh*t. I feel as though it’s so important to be realistic about the stages of retraining, not just the rosettes and success stories.

What people don’t see though is the endless hours that I spend with this horse off-camera forming our bond in grooming, massage pad sessions, ground work, chilled buckle-end hacks. Ember wants for nothing, there is nothing physically wrong with him, it’s just a small mental block that we will no doubt overcome in time.

Anyone else going through the same struggs, remember that the success will come, and when it does it’ll be 10x more epic knowing how hard we’ve worked 💪🏻

A great weekend spent county hopping, after I finally figured out which county I should have actually been in 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😅

First stop was the Open Day with fellow spon 👯‍♀️ Special thanks to Annie and her team for being so hospitable, and who very kindly popped in to deliver a new addition to my crochet pony gang 🥹

I am extremely happy to announce that recently I started a new full-time job with James Ferguson Racing as Communications Manager 🏇🏼 📱 🥂

For the last few weeks I’ve been learning the ropes and getting stuck into my new day-to-day life in Newmarket, it’s a pleasure to be working with such a passionate team, lovely horses and owners.

At some point I’ll be filming a ‘day in the life’ vlog so you can see how I fit it all in… very early mornings for a start!

A brilliant Boxing Day at Houghton Hall with the , on board .m.ward’s perfect ‘Posh’ 🍷
