New Year's Day brings the traditional meal of Greens, Peas, Pork and Cornbread. Did you know that eating chicken, turkey or seafood on New Year's Day is considered bad luck?
🍀Greens resemble money, specifically folding money. Eat green, leafy vegetables to ensure good fortune for 2023. Southern favorites include cabbage, collard greens, mustard greens and turnip greens.
🍀Peas and beans symbolize coins or wealth. Choose traditional black-eyed peas, lentils, or beans seasoned with pork, ham or sausage.
🍀Pork is considered a sign of prosperity because pigs root forward symbolizing progress.
🍀Cornbread symbolizes gold because corn kernels represent coins. Cornbread is essential with black-eyed peas and greens, so you can triple your luck for the year.
There are certain foods that can bring bad luck so they must be avoided on New Year's Day.
🚫Seafood - Lobster, shrimp and crawfish cause bad luck because they often swim in a backward direction, which could mean setbacks in the year ahead. Crabs swim sideways so your efforts will be horizontal moves instead of progressive.
🚫Poultry - Chicken, turkey or any fowl is bad luck. Birds scratch backward, which reverses your progress. Eating a winged creature on New Year's Day means your luck will fly away.
