We love a fearless trailblazer, advocate and women’s empowerment activist! This week’s Giant goes to Dr. Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini Zuma who hails from the beautiful country of South Africa.

A medical doctor by profession, Dr. Zuma has been fighting for the liberation of South Africa well over a decade. She is also champions African development and women empowerment across the globe.
Some of her career accomplishments included serving in President Nelson Mandela’s Cabinet as minister of health, where she led the process of building a non-racial health system and initiating radical health reforms. She has also held other political offices in the South African government which included being appointed the minister of foreign Affairs and minister of home (interior) affairs. In 2012 she was elected as the chairperson of the African Union Commission. Her work in the African Union Commission focuses on a continental drive to ensure an Africa that is prosperous, integrated and peaceful. She is the founding chairperson of the Council of the African Union Foundation, which is aimed at mobilising resources for the African Union and promoting its programmes. Dr. Zuma is the recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards

GIANT OF THE WEEK💁🏾‍♀️

This week’s Giant goes to a force to be reckon with and a woman who will go down in History for her monumental achievement as the first ever elected female president of an African country. Yes, we are talking about former Liberian president, Ellen Sir-leaf Johnson.

Prior to becoming president, she served for five years as Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa of the United Nations Development Program, as Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and was the first woman to lead the United Nations Development Project for Africa. She later became a nobel peace prize winner and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civil award, for her personal courage and unwavering commitment to expanding freedom and improving the lives of people in Liberia and across Africa. And in 2010, as the only female and African Head of State, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was named by Newsweek Magazine as one of the World Top Ten Leaders.

We love a woman politician and diplomat! This week’s Giant goes to the first female president of Ethiopia President Sahle-Work Zewde

She began her career in the Ministry of Education and later joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988. She began her long diplomatic carrier as Ambassador to Senegal with accreditation to Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and the Gambia. She was appointed as the first dedicated Director-General of the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) at the level of Under-Secretary-General. In June 2018, she was appointed by Secretary- General Antonio Guterres as his Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU). She was the first woman to hold these two positions.

President Zewde is a beacon of hope and inspiration for many women across the continent of Africa and globally.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a Nigerian economist, global finance expert, and international development professional. She serves as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization. She’s also the first woman and first African to ever lead the World Trade Organization as Director-General.

Earlier in her career, Ngozi served as Nigeria's Finance Minister, two terms; and also served as the country Foreign Minister in 2006. She seats on many board across the global with a notable one being: board chair for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance that has immunized 760 million children globally. She’s also held several notable position at the World Bank Group; managed $81 billion budget across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America.

GIANT OF THE WEEK💁🏾‍♀️

This week’s Giant is the legendary and climate justice icon Wangari Muta Maathai, who hails from Kenya🇰🇪, East Africa. She was a global icon who gained international recognition for her immense work in promoting democracy, human rights, and environmental conservation.

Wangari was the first African woman from East & Central Africa to attain a PhD. She was also the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace. Wangari was also a political activist who held governmental position in the Kenyan government, she also founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization with the goal of promoting environmental conservation; building climate resilience, and empowering communities, especially women and girls; to foster democratic space and sustainable livelihoods. Since its founding in 1977 till present, the Green Belt Movement has planted over 51 million trees in Kenya.

Wangari became a beacon of hope and inspiration for many women across the continent of Africa and globally.

We are officially launching our newest series which spotlights dynamic and trailblazing African women icons and legends who have made significant impact in their countries, regions, the continent of Africa, and globally!

This week’s Giant is the magnificent Angie Elizabeth Brooks who hails from Liberia West Africa. She was a Liberian diplomat and jurist. She also became the first and only African woman to serve as the President of the United Nations General Assembly. She was also the second woman from any sovereign and UN mandated country to head the U.N. body. She was passionate and committed to advancing women rights, elevating their presence, providing space for their voices to be heard, and advocating for more women to be put in leadership and decision making positions.

Angie became a beacon of hope and inspiration for many women across the continent of Africa and globally.
