We've all seen it in movies and TV shows, the hero gets up close and personal with a ticking bomb, dramatically assessing the wires and snipping them one by one until they save the day. But is that really how it works?

The truth is, cutting wires to disarm a bomb is a Hollywood myth. Real IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) are much more complex than what we see on the big screen. They are designed to be unpredictable and difficult to disarm, making it near impossible for anyone to simply cut all the wires at once.

Let's take a closer look at the typical Hollywood portrayal of an IED:
- A complex homemade timing circuit
- A big LED readout for dramatic effect
- Curly wires to add to the "bomby" aesthetic
- An electric detonator with no visible booster
- A bundle of explosive sticks or blocks
- A beeper to make a loud noise when the timer reaches zero
- A plug that looks like a power supply, but no visible battery

Now, if a hero were to try and disarm this bomb by cutting wires, they'd likely just blow it up. Real IEDs are much more advanced and sophisticated, often equipped with anti-tamper devices that make it even more difficult to disarm them.

So what's the best way to disarm a bomb? It depends on the specific type and design of the bomb. In most cases, the best approach is to disrupt or destroy the bomb from a safe distance using specialized tools and equipment. Attempting to disarm a bomb manually is incredibly risky and should only be done by highly trained professionals.

Despite the superiority of the F-15, the introduction of the F-16 was necessary due to its lower cost and versatility. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, faced some of the toughest challenges of any American president in history. The most significant one was the US Civil War, which claimed the lives of around 700,000 to 900,000 Americans. If prorated to the current US population, that would equate to approximately 9 million deaths today.

During the Civil War, Lincoln faced one setback after another, with bumbling and incompetence by various generals leading to humiliating defeats. On top of this, he had to deal with treason at home, vicious attacks from opposition parties and within his own party, and even disloyalty from his cabinet. Amidst all of this, his favorite son passed away at the young age of 11. In his private life, he had to cope with a wife suffering from bouts of insanity.

Despite all of this, Lincoln remained poised, graceful, dignified, and determined. His ability to handle these challenges is almost superhuman and truly humbling to contemplate. He ultimately prevailed, and the rebellion was crushed. Unfortunately, less than a week after the main Southern army surrendered, he was assassinated by a Southern sympathizer at a theater.

The photos below show Lincoln at the start of his presidency on the left and four years later. It's clear that the challenges he faced took a toll on him, but he remained resolute until the end.

During WWII, soldiers were forced to go to war and face the possibility of death on the battlefield. To sweeten the deal and show their appreciation, the "Hollywood Canteen" was established in the USA. Soldiers could attend the canteen, with their uniform as the ticket, and enjoy good food, dancing, and entertainment before shipping out overseas.

Check out the snapshot of a soldier asked to dance by Linda Darnell - his knees are literally knocking out of him! Female stars like Rita Hayworth and Marlene Dietrich served the "boys" to make them feel valued. Bette Davis even served as the president of the canteen, which was entirely free of charge. Soldiers from allied countries were also allowed to stop by.

Over 3,000 stars, actors, and other volunteers signed up to provide this special experience to soldiers. They made the soldiers feel valuable and that they were getting something very special. It's worth noting that in earlier times, human sacrifices were often treated particularly well before the sacrifice. That's how it was for soldiers at the Hollywood Canteen - they got the star treatment up close before heading off to potentially face death on the battlefield.

👉 The Ottoman Empire had a unique system of government called the 'devşirme', which was a form of human taxation where young Christian boys were taken from their families and trained to become members of the Ottoman military or government bureaucracy. These boys, known as the "sons of the devşirme," were highly valued for their loyalty and were often the most powerful and influential figures in the empire. Some of the most famous and successful Ottoman leaders, such as Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolović, were of devşirme origin.

👉 Another interesting fact about the Ottoman Empire is that it was one of the first empires to establish a system of public education. The empire's first schools, called 'mektep', were established in the 14th century and were designed to provide education for both boys and girls. The curriculum included subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics, and religious studies, and the education was provided free of charge. The system of public education in the Ottoman Empire was so successful that it served as a model for other countries in the region.

👉 Additionally, the Ottoman Empire was also one of the first to establish a postal system. The Ottoman postal service, known as the "tanzimat postal service" began in 1840 and it was the fastest and most efficient postal service in the world. It was used to send letters and packages as well as to deliver official government documents. The postal service was an important factor in the growth of trade and commerce in the empire and it played a significant role in connecting the empire's far-reaching territories.

👉 Lastly, Ottoman Empire was one of the first empires to establish a state-run health system, it was called "Darüşşifa". It was a network of hospitals and clinics that were established throughout the empire to provide medical care for the population. The empire also maintained a corps of trained physicians and surgeons, and these hospitals were equipped with the latest medical technology. This was one of the first examples of state-funded healthcare in the world.

These are just a few of the many mind-blowing facts about the Ottoman Empire, which continue to impact the world today.
