Today we gather in the month of May that is dedicated to Mary, the nine days between the Ascension and Pentecost when she was united with the Apostles and the feast of our Lady of Fatima.

Today is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima. In 1917, she appeared to three shepherd children with an important message - and that message is just as important NOW as it was 100+ years ago!

Friends, in today’s Gospel (John 16:29–33), Jesus promises peace to his disciples, who would abandon him at his arrest. “Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered . . . and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me.”

And Jesus’ prophecy is fulfilled at the Resurrection. The disciples are gathered in the upper room, that place of fear, and suddenly Jesus is in their midst. What is the reaction of the disciples? They are afraid. And no wonder: they had abandoned him.

In the face of this fear, Jesus does two simple things. First, he shows his wounds. Second, he offers his peace. Both are important. By the first action, he reminds them of the sins that put an end to his life. In the second great move, Jesus says, “Shalom,” which means “peace.” Jesus returns not with vengeance, not with a renewal of violence, not with more of the same; rather, the violence brought against him is met with shalom, the gift of peace.

Friends, in today’s Gospel (John 16:20–23), Jesus exhorts us to pray with expectant faith: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.” Invoking the name of Jesus is an effective way to monitor the quality and to shape the content of our prayer.

When we pray “through Christ our Lord,” we are assuming the stance and attitude of Jesus, aligning ourselves to him, compelling ourselves to desire what he desires. Accordingly, it is altogether consistent to pray in the name of Jesus for peace, for justice, for the forgiveness of our enemies, for greater faith, or for the health of those we love.

Those are all goods that Jesus would want. But how anomalous it would be to pray for vengeance against our enemies in Jesus’ name, or for a Maserati through Christ our Lord!
