Antlers on male spotted deer are not only an attractive accessory, but also play an important role in the context of species survival and preservation. These antlers are used in battles between males for mating rights with females. Large and strong antlers give a huge advantage in capturing the attention of females and dominating their opponents. The curved, three-pronged antlers extend nearly 3 feet and shed each year.

Found only in some parts of the world is gopher tree, which Biblical patriarch Noah used to make the famous ark on God`s command to survive the great deluge. But one such is still standing robust in the forest in the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Kerala. Botanists have confirmed that at least a single gopher is standing there on the fringes of a forest path between Kochu Pamba and Gavi in Pathanamthitta district. The Bible (Genesis 6:15) says, Noah, as ordered by Lord, made the ark out of gopher wood on which he and his kin and some of earth`s fauna outlived the great flood that submerged the planet. The tree standing at Gavi forest is of robust stem and lush foliage. According to state Forest Department officials, though the fully-grown gopher in Gavi is the only such tree sighted in the periphery of the jungle, possibly there could be more such trees still surviving in the inner forests of PTR. Though it is a rare tree, the Forest Department has refrained from marking it as special by putting a sign board, fearing that would attract forest brigands. #gopher #gophertree #noahsark #bible #gavi #kerala #wildlife #godsowncountry #kerala #keralatourism #incredible India #natgeoindia #natgeotravellerindia #shotoniphone #travel keraladiaries #krishwanderlustphotography #thegboots @keralatourism @wwf @incredibleindia @natgeoindia @natgeotravellerindia @thegboots @krish.wanderlust
Few years back Ravichettan (KSEB IB Staff, Kochupampa) was walking towards the IB as a part of his daily duty and suddenly spotted a small animal moving towards him. He believed that it is a mongoose but decided to record the same in his mobile. This fearless animal came right until his feet and then moved away. Later on when wildlife photographer @rahul_r_nair_trivandrum visited the placed he showed him this video to realise that unknowingly he has recorded one amongst the rarest animals found in the Western Ghats, The Nigiri Marten. The Nilgiri marten is the only marten species native to southern India. It lives in the hills of the Nilgiris and parts of the Western Ghats. With only around a thousand members left it is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. These fearless small carnivores fall in the family of weasels and badgers and are very elusive in nature. Myristica swamps are freshwater swamps predominated by members of the Myristicaceae family. These forests are characterized by trees with large protruding roots jutting out of waterlogged soil which remains inundated throughout the year. They have evolved over millions of years and are comprised of old-growth trees. In India, these unique habitats occur in the Western Ghats and a smaller distribution exists in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Typically, Myristica swamps are seen next to rivers and help in retaining water and act as a sponge, ensuring perennial water availability. Historically, they formed a large hydrological network all along the Western Ghats.Characteristics:Roots spring out of main trunk provide additional support to trees in the soft soilBreathing rootsFerns and herbs are more flood tolerantMost of the trees here belong to a family Myristicaceae which is known as Living Fossil #rosemala #waterfall #shendurneywildlifesanctuary #rivercrossing #godsowncountry #kerala #keralatourism #incredible India #natgeoindia #natgeotravellerindia #shotoniphone #travel keraladiaries #krishwanderlustphotography #thegboots #myristica #swamp @keralatourism @wwfindia @incredibleindia @natgeoindia @natgeotravellerindia @thegboots @krish.wanderlust
