Finnegan is a music-loving outcast who has been stuck on Rottnest for a little too long. Scrappy, enthusiastic and possessing a laugh as grating as nails on a chalkboard, Finnegan is just as comfortable leading the pub in a song or relieving a passer-by of that pesky wallet they've been holding onto.

Usually found with her trusty guitar Fred, wherever Finnegan goes trouble isn't too far behind.

Music is a big part of You, Fred & the Road Ahead, and the songs wouldn't sound as awesome as they do without the incredible talents of Lore Burns on cello!

Lore is a non-binary cellist, actor, composer, and writer. They commenced formal music study at the age of seven when they began learning cello. Since then, Lore has pursued music with a passion by learning as many instruments as humanly possible as well as performing professionally and teaching cello.

They also began composing at the age of ten and have composed works for a variety of different ensembles, including Ranges Young Strings, the Dandenong Ranges Orchestra, Ensemble Con Fuoco and private commissions. Lore is currently pursuing a varied career in acting, composing, writing, music performance, and cello teaching as well as studying a Graduate Diploma in Arts. Their most recent compositional works include “Cocoon”, “Crystal Tresses” and “Here is a Safe Place”.

Fun fact: When threatened, Quokka mothers will drop their babies and use them as a distraction to get away from predators. How nurturing!

We assure you that no Quokka babies were harmed in the making of Episode 1. Well... not many anyway.

MEET THE CAST

Liliana Braumberger is an actor, photographer and video artist based in Melbourne and is excited to join YF&RA as Marlow! Liliana made her musical theatre debut earlier in 2022 playing Elinor in Sense and Sensibility the Musical, with other recent performances including the singing Princess Alexandra of Bavaria in The Regina Monologues and Emma (Introduction to Emma).

Liliana has musical training in voice, oboe and piano and trained at the VCA Actors Studio. Other roles include Kitty (Pride and Prejudice and Five Years), Dottore (A Servant of Two Masters), shorts with Northern Theatre Company and other credits include a variety of stints behind the camera and backstage, including video artist on Bruce Beresford’s opera Othello in 2018 and a range of photography and design credits for 24 Carrot Productions.

So... what exactly is the show about?

In a Retro-Futuristic Australia, stuffy and insecure MARLOW (Liliana Braumberger) arrives on the wrong side of the country and it seems her only ticket home to Melbourne may be the charismatic, music-loving outcast FINNEGAN (Chloe Towan).

But, the journey won't be easy. In order to get back home, Finnegan and Marlow must deal with a range of forces including a particularly determined police officer (Nathan Fernandez), corrupt mining magnates, extremist cults and - above all - their own pasts. Will they ever return to Melbourne or should they have both stayed solo?

Featuring a cast of talented musical theatre performers and new original music, You, Fred & the Road Ahead tells a story of going home, facing your past and making some music along the way.

MEET THE CAST

Chloe Towan is a Melbourne-based actor, writer and creative and the creator of You, Fred & the Road Ahead.

Chloe originally studied Musical Theatre at APO Arts Academy, graduating in 2015. Since then she has performed in a variety of productions, including Shakespeare (Twelfth Night with MSC), Immersive Theatre (David Butler Studios' Mad World), Immersive Theatre (Time Lord with Innes Lloyd) and Musicals (Most recently, Sense and Sensibility: The Musical). Chloe has developed a love of creating her own characters and loves to write and produce her own work. Chloe recently workshopped two new musical concepts with Be You Inc's Be New program.

Chloe is delighted to be playing Finnegan, the light-fingered, happy-go-lucky musician with a dark past, in You, Fred & the Road Ahead.

Australia. A country of searing deserts, sweeping vistas and rugged terrains. Without reliable transportation, traveling the almost four thousand kilometre width of the country - if you survive - could take hundreds of days, slightly less time than it takes for a Regular Parcel to arrive through Australia Post. That is, of course, assuming you can get into the country in the first place.

When Finnegan and Marlow meet on Rottnest Island, they decide to team up and travel together to travel across the country to get to their hometown of Melbourne. But, with no money, no transportation and a particularly determined officer on their tails it might be a harder journey than they thought.
