The fullness of our relationship with God cannot happen apart from our relationship with others and with ourselves. While we can distinguish between our relationship with God, others, and ourselves, these connections are deeply intertwined. Complex trauma affects all of them.

It impacts our connection with God, our relationship with ourselves, and how we relate to others and the world around us. These relationships influence each other, creating a ripple effect that shapes our lives in profound ways.

I've learned so much about love and attunement through my experiences with my dog. Every moment of truly connecting with her reveals something new—something that heals my nervous system and brings me closer to understanding God's love.

When I attune to her, when I give and receive love without conditions, I glimpse God's face. It's a reminder that God is present in every experience of genuine love. This love is so much more real and true than the brokenness I grew up with, the dysfunctional relationships I once thought reflected God's nature.

I used to believe those distorted, painful experiences were what love and God looked like because that was all I knew. But now, I see they were just flawed, fragmented reflections of something so much greater. Real love, the kind I experience in these simple, everyday moments, is a truer reflection of who God really is.

God transcends us—He's beyond us—but He's also incredibly immanent and present within us. When God draws close to us, how does He connect with us except through the very person, the very body, the very being He has given us? He speaks to us not only through our thoughts but also through our imaginations, our emotions, and our physical sensations. It's through all these aspects of who we are that God comes near, impressing Himself upon us and communicating with us.

But for those of us who have experienced complex trauma, one of the deep consequences is a fractured sense of self. This blocks us from being able to receive in our bodies the experience of being loved - even by God.

This journey is about reclaiming that trust in ourselves, recognizing that God can speak through all parts of our being. It's about healing and learning to honor that inner voice again.

God is saying to me—and to you:

“Do you know that I love you completely and perfectly right now? Not some future, more polished, more perfect version of you, but you, exactly as you are at this moment.

With all your flaws, doubts, and whatever stories you tell yourself—I love you, right here, right now. There isn’t a future, better version of you that I love more than who you are today. Because, simply put, there is no ‘better’ version of you to me.

The you in this very moment is who I love, fully and without condition.”

Are we able to let this land in our hearts? I wasn't able to. I share why in this podcast episode!

One of the most powerful ways our image of God is distorted by trauma is the belief "in our body" that God cannot possibly really care about our emotions, feelings, hopes and dreams. Even if we may come to believe all this intellectually, as trauma survivors there is a much more deeply ingrained memory in our bodies of emotional neglect, enmeshment etc.

When we heal from complex trauma, this embodied memory also slowly begins to heal. It takes time, but eventually, we can have a new embodied belief that God truly loves us, wants to be close to us, is interested in our emotions, hopes and dreams, and that he longs to have us confidently share all these with him as his Beloved.

For those of us who have experienced trauma, the idea of spiritual freedom can feel out of reach. So many basic aspects of our humanity—like owning and exercising our freedom—were never fully developed. We were often too afraid to choose freely, fearing our choices would upset others and lead to our rejection or abandonment. So, we forfeited our freedom without ever learning how to use it.

But healing takes us back to the point where we stopped growing. And yes, it may look messy or even irresponsible at first, but God delights in this process. He desires our healing, our growth, and our freedom to become who we are meant to be.

For so long, I didn’t trust my own desires. I was constantly asking God, “Is this what You want me to want? Is this right?” It caused so much anxiety and guilt because I feared my desires didn’t align with His will.
But as I heal, I’ve discovered something amazing: God delights in walking with me through my desires, exploring them together. Instead of fearing my desires, I’ve realised they are often God’s way of initiating a deeper dialogue with me.
Learning to trust that God communicates through the desires He’s placed in me has brought me to a new place of hope, healing, and inner freedom.

I realised something profound: I’ve struggled to sense God’s love, not because He’s distant, but because I believed He had to love me, as if it were an obligation. I thought I knew Him, that my relationship with God was solid—especially after some powerful conversion experiences in my relationship with him. But deep down, I always had this distorted image of him and I never even knew it . I couldn't fully receive His forgiveness, His love, because I didn’t truly know who He is.

So, I prayed, 'Lord, I surrender everything I thought I knew about You. Give me new eyes, new ears, and a new heart to see You, know You, and receive Your love.'

Discernment isn’t about feeling pressured or coerced into figuring out exactly what God wants. It’s not about making the "perfect" or "holiest" choice out of fear or perfectionism.

True discernment happens in a relationship of mutual love and freedom—between God and us. When we feel the weight of compulsion to get everything right, that’s not discernment, and it can be a reflection of deeper unresolved trauma.

When we carry unhealed trauma, it can feel like our nervous system is constantly in an agitated, hyper-vigilant, and stressed state. This makes it harder to fully act with clarity or purpose because our brain shifts into survival mode.

In this state, fear can dominate our discernment process and we might focus on pleasing God out of anxiety or uncertainty instead of having the freedom to choose out of secure love.

Healing complex trauma isn't just about emotional recovery – it's about reclaiming our ability to think clearly, act freely, and exercise spiritual discernment from a place of authentic love for God.

More important than our ability to say "yes" to everything we feel God asks of us is our ability to feel safe in His love, safe enough to give our genuine, authentic answer.

It's okay to say, "Lord, if this is what You're asking, I’m not ready. I can’t do that yet."

That kind of honesty honours God so much more than an obligatory "yes" driven by fear of punishment or consequences. God values the relationship we build through trust, honesty, and openness more than He values a fearful "yes."

Let your answer come from a place of love, not fear.

As we journey through life, we build an archive of experiences that remind us we are loved — even in our imperfections. Slowly, we come to realize that God’s love, and our own love for ourselves, is unwavering despite our mistakes. This love is what heals us over time.

The more we experience this love, the less fear of criticism holds us back. Though the pain of judgment may still be present, we gain the inner strength to endure and heal. With grace, we learn that we can be held in our pain by God and hold ourselves in love.

For a long time, I thought the goal was to be a "good disciple." But now, I realize that’s not the true focus. The real center of everything is Christ — our relationship with God. From that connection, everything else flows, including discipleship and spiritual fruitfulness.

There was a time when my fear of criticism held me back, and I saw it as a sign of weak faith. But every stage of the journey matters, and we grow from each part. It’s not about perfect performance, but about deepening our relationship with God and letting love guide us.

It's important to remember that spiritual development isn't a race or a measure of holiness. Not everyone reaches every stage in this life, and that's okay. The stages are about growth and maturity, not about being "better."

Wherever you are on your journey, your understanding will deepen as you continue to grow and integrate your experiences. As you revisit teachings or reflections, you'll often find new insights that resonate in different ways, depending on where you are in your spiritual path.

Take your time. Trust the process. Growth happens in its own way, in its own time.

As we journey through life, the fear of judgment and not belonging can weigh us down. But as those fears fall away, the bigger picture starts to come into focus. We may not see the entire path, but in God's time, everything begins to click into place.

We might not fully grasp our purpose or vocation in this life, but there comes a point when we start walking in it with a new clarity. It's not about having all the answers or knowing exactly where we're headed. Instead, it's about letting our true selves emerge and flow outward, trusting in the process even when the future is uncertain.

Embrace the journey, let go, and trust in God's timing.

We know we have grown in spiritual maturity when our inner critic no longer persecutes the weak, sinful, and broken parts of ourselves. Instead, we find that we are able to extend Christ's compassion towards ourselves and invite our exiled parts to come home where we are ready to offer forgiveness, patience, and space for every part to find its place within us.

Developing spiritual maturity involves more than just focusing on the spiritual aspect of our humanity. Spiritual maturity requires emotional depth and maturity, and this requires our emotional and psychological healing to be integrated with our spirituality.

When we are in the grips of spiritual fervour, we feel very passionate about our faith and about God. But we often do not have self-awareness, and in our passion, we can be very fixed and very rigid about there being right ways of doing something.

We can be very stubborn and dogmatic. We're not very accepting of differences in opinion. It's part of that zeal that we experience because we're so convicted about what is right and what is true and who God is and how He works.

Spiritual fervour is a very essential and important stage of spiritual development even though it is important that we continue to grow towards spiritual maturity.
