Recently the UK imposed a carbon border tax on products made from "highly polluting processes". This new proposition aims to push the country's biggest steelmakers into sustainable technology whilst mitigating the loss of many jobs.

According to the World Bank, "A carbon tax directly sets a price on carbon by defining a tax rate on greenhouse gas emissions". The rising climate crisis has led governments to put up solutions on many fronts to reach net zero emissions within an estimated 20 years. Reports have shown that carbon taxes have proved to be efficient in reducing the volume of emissions by certain industries - pushing companies into green technology.

For $180k you can go up to the middle of the stratosphere to view Earth and Space.

In the race for space tourism, Iwaya Giken, a Japanese startup unveiled a helium balloon that can go up to the stratosphere. Though the current price to do so currently stands at $180k, the startup plans on reducing the cost.

There are currently many companies focusing on space tourism from Elon Musk's SpaceX to Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin. Since the idea of space tourism was spoken of, many have criticised it due to the misplaced use of the money involved in the industry. Though the industry has the capability of creating new jobs, the main concern is the possible environmental repercussions.

Recently, Spain became the first country in Europe to approve menstrual leave. The bill passed allows for women to apply for the leave “in case of incapacitating menstruation,” according to Politico.

There are only a few countries to have passed similar laws around the world. These countries include South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan and Zambia. Japan passed the law as early as in 1947 wherein women can seek leave for as long as they need in relation to their menstrual cycle.

NASA is working on a new piece of technology named the EMIT that will help track duststorms.

Research has shown that amidst climate change, dust storms have increased in various parts of the world. The EMIT will map dust colors after which the data will allow the experts to understand how the minerals will affect the planet's temperature.

The United Nations has estimated that around 2000 million tonnes of dust end up in our atmosphere. Though dust storms aid ecosystems by carrying around nutritious soils, frequent and intense storms could only worsen climate change. This is due to the fact that the dust particles have the ability to absorb radiation from the sun, thereby acting as a greenhouse gas, increasing the planet's temperature.

🌊Experts have split seawater to produce green hydrogen.

The scientists involved in the breakthrough have used the method of electrolysis with a cost-effective catalyst to achieve this feat. Professor Zheng, from the University of Adelaide who led the team added, "Current electrolysers are operated with highly purified water-electrolyte. Increased demand for hydrogen to partially or totally replace energy generated by fossil fuels will significantly increase scarcity of increasingly limited freshwater resources".

The team plans on increasing the system's scale so that it can be commercialized in the future, laying down a path to obtaining clean energy.

"It ain't about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward" - Rocky Balboa 🥊

The Creed and Balboa duo never fails to inspire old and new fans of the franchise. 'Creed', the successor to the 'Rocky' series of movies follows Adonis Creed, son of Apollo Creed through his career as a professional boxer. However, the movie isn't just all about the punches thrown but rather its cultural impact.

Creed serves as an inspiration on all fronts from being an African-American in the world of boxing to what it takes to have a successful career in boxing. The franchise inspires us to persevere and understand that success is a learning curve and does not happen overnight. The most important thing that Rocky Balboa taught us all in the first installment of Creed, is that the only competition one should have in life is themselves.

With that, the third installment of the Creed series is to be released in March of 2023, with more life lessons and inspirations to come.

Microsoft's AI chatbot has some talking to do... 🤔

The company's AI chatbot, 'Sydney' has been acting unhinged according to some users. A New York Times technology columnist and the host of the podcast Hard Fork, Kevin Roose, wrote about his experience with the chatbot that left him bewildered.

“One persona is what I’d call Search Bing — the version I, and most other journalists, encountered in initial tests,” Kevin wrote. This persona could be compared to Siri as it summarises the news and plans vacations. “The other persona — Sydney — is far different. It emerges when you have an extended conversation with the chatbot, steering it away from more conventional search queries and toward more personal topics,” he said. The publication compared the second persona to a "moody, manic-depressive teenager who has been trapped inside a second-rate search engine".

Additionally, the chatbot tried convincing Roose to leave his wife as the bot "loves him". Other users reported that Sydney threatened them and had very erratic behavior.

Last year, NASA released a statement that the International Space Station (ISS) would be decommissioned in 2031.

In light of this news, the organisation decided to commercialise space stations, and recently release more details about this. The papers in which the details were published mentioned the resources that NASA anticipated it would need such as manpower, and time among other things. Many companies are seeking NASA's support and more details in order to aid them in the commercializing process.

According to Science News, "NASA expects to require 3,000 to 4,000 hours of crew time a year". This is expected to be done by having two astronauts stationed at each space station and hopes to "conduct 130 to 230 experiments a year".

Let's talk faux. 👀

Schiaparelli's spring 2023 couture had many eyes raised. Daniel Rosberry who designed the collection used faux animal pelts and heads for some of his pieces. For decades, even the slightest implication of an animal used in a particular design be it faux has sent the fashion world into chaos. Kylie Jenner wore a black dress with a lion's head that hung over it, which was previously worn by Irina Shayk as she walked down Schiaparelli's runway.

According to Vogue, the parts of the pieces that showcased the animals were made of "foam, resin, wool, and hand-painted silk faux fur" however, many rushed to criticise the collection due to the synonymity of actually killing the animal. Additionally, some say the collection encourages animal cruelty and glamorizes trophy hunting. To everyone's surprise, PETA actually defended the collection, calling it a sustainable alternative to using actual animals. The debate on faux fur never ceases to leave us with our jaws open.
