The number of people driving for Uber has hit an all time high, as concerns about the rising cost of living push people to find new ways to make money.

Almost 5 million people are now picking up passengers or making food deliveries for the company, 31% more than last year, boss Dara Khosrowshahi said.

Uber has been struggling with a driver shortage since the pandemic, leading to longer waiting times for customers.

Airbnb said travel demand remains strong, despite concerns about economic slowdown and rising prices hitting households.

Nearly 104 million nights and experiences were booked on the platform in the April through June period, a record high for the lodging website.

Long-term stays continued to be the fastest growing type of travel, a shift driven by the rise of remote work.

But international and city travel, which had lagged, have also recovered.

The company said it was now in the middle of its strongest peak summer travel season yet, and it assured investors that it was well poised for whatever may hit the economy.

Instagram says it is pausing a rollout of new features on its app following a backlash online from users, influencers, and celebrities.

Among the new features was an increase in recommended video content, in a similar style to rival app TikTok.

The display and feeds were criticized as people felt they were not seeing photos from friends and family as much.

Meta, Instagram's parent company, said it wanted to "take the time" to get the changes right.

The revamp of Instagram towards more video content is believed to have been ignited by the soaring popularity of competitor TikTok - where users post and watch more videos as opposed to static photographs.

Meta's total revenue slipped 1% to $28.8bn (£23.7bn), but the company fended off a decline in users.

Analysts fear the company's growth may have peaked after years of large gains.

Rivals such as TikTok have eroded its popularity, while more firms are competing for ad spending.

Canadian e-commerce platform Shopify laid off about 10 percent of its workers Tuesday as a pandemic-driven boom in online shopping has waned.

The reduction in workforce came while US tech giants scale back or even pause hiring due to economic conditions roiled by inflation and the war in Ukraine.

Most of the layoffs would be in areas not involved in building products, Shopify chief executive Tobias Lutke said in an email to employees that the firm posted online.

Amazon is to raise the price of its Prime service for UK customers due to higher operating costs.

From September, monthly subscriptions will go up £1 to £8.99 and annual membership will rise from £79 to £95.

Amazon said the price rise, its first in the UK since 2014, was partly due to inflation, which is at a 40-year high.

Other services such as Netflix have also increased subscription prices, despite signs people are beginning to cut back on streaming services.

However, Amazon Prime offers more than just its streaming service. Prime also offer unlimited deliveries of products.

Amazon said the new pricing would begin from September, or at the customer's next membership renewal date, adding that switching to an annual plan or cancellation of membership was also an option.

Keeping women safe is now "at the heart" of the world's largest dating app, Tinder, it claims.

The technology company is launching a partnership with the campaign group No More, aiming to end domestic violence.

"Our safety work is never done," Tinder's first female chief executive, Renate Nyborg, tells BBC News.

But charity End Violence Against Women says it is only a "small step" in addressing the disproportionate amount of abuse women experienced online.

Tinder has faced scrutiny over abusive interactions on the service, with concerns dating apps are attracting sexual predators.

Amazon is taking legal action against the administrators of more than 10,000 Facebook groups, the BBC has learned.

It says the groups are generating fake reviews on Amazon marketplaces in the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Japan.

The tech giant says the groups offer money or free goods in exchange for reviews being posted on Amazon.

One of the groups, removed earlier this year by Facebook's parent company Meta, had 43,000 members.

It was called "Amazon Product Review".

Tesla, which made waves last year when it revealed a major investment in Bitcoin, has now sold off most of its holdings of the cryptocurrency.

The electric car firm has offloaded 75% of its Bitcoin, which was worth about $2bn (£1.7bn) at the end of 2021.

It is backing away as the value of the cryptocurrency has plunged, falling by more than 50% this year.
