Why gulf states must not wait long to tax global tech

More countries are getting more convinced by the day about the necessity of imposing taxes on technology businesses, as they keep on acquiring a greater marketshare of ecommerce and marketing services. More so, as this comes with the flight of huge profits outside of these countries to the corporate headquarters of these tech behemoths.

These businesses do not contribute directly to supporting investments into the countries where they take their profits from. On the contrary, their activities lead to the destruction of vital sectors.

Big tech must share profits with traditional media

Recently Facebook carried out what may have been the single largest content takedown in its history. Any content that looked vaguely like news, even if it very much was not, disappeared from the platform in Australia.

Clearly, 'prosumers' are who will matter most for tech companies

Work from home created its own dynamics, and these will remain in place for a long time. The rise of prosumers is a natural outcome of this.

Gone are the days of corporates and customers wielding low control over tech innovation and product choices. Accelerated by the pandemic, companies quickened organizational improvements that would usually have taken five years to complete in a period of five short months.

Our challenges now lie in identifying and capturing opportunities for individuality and human-led experiences to drive forward a new ‘prosumer’ tech-agenda. (Prosumers are those consumers who want a say in the designing of the products they plan to use.)

Businesses must continue to place tech at centre of post-COVID-19 revival

What’s new is the technology that is invented and upgraded in times of crisis, and not just utilizing the already available solutions that might not be as effective as the ones introduced specially to meet current and evolving requirements.

The pandemic has given an opportunity to businesses to innovate since consumers are apprehensive, and reluctant to make shopping trips and return to office buildings. Consumer behaviors towards purchases have changed to not only placing online orders and preferring digital payments, but also towards the technology used by retailers to store products.

People returning to work following the long pandemic will find an array of tech-infused gadgetry to improve workplace safety but which could pose risks for long-term personal and medical privacy.

Temperature checks, distance monitors, digital "passports," wellness surveys, and robotic cleaning and disinfection systems are being deployed in many workplaces seeking to reopen.

Tech giants and startups are offering solutions that include computer vision detection of vital signs to wearables which can offer early indications of the onset of Covid-19 and apps that keep track of health metrics.

Salesforce and IBM have partnered on a "digital health pass" to let people share their vaccination and health status on their smartphones.

Clear, a tech startup known for airport screening, has created its own health pass which is being used by organizations such as the National Hockey League and MGM Resorts.
