What’s the difference between our parenting approach as we welcomed this little guy (child #8) into our family versus child #1?
Well, really what it boils down to is beginning with the end in mind. By this time, we had supported a child from infancy all the way to 16 years old, and we had several years of child development to witness occurring right before our eyes. We had front row seats to see where he started and where he was as a teenager (and how our parenting had played a role in all this).
In this week’s episode Shawn interviews Mirra, a mom of two who is just beginning her parenting journey.
They discuss some really amazing insights surrounding creating your own parenting style and taking into account where your child will be in ten years...really just inviting parents to see the big picture.
We hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed creating it for you!

This is a sensitive topic, but as our latest episode points out, if you don’t have a plan or guideline in place for how much time you are comfortable with your kids spending in front of a screen, you will always feel like you are failing.
Use a calendar, time blocking, or visual reminders to set up your “target” for screen time usage in your home and you will begin to feel like you are controlling technology rather than technology is controlling you.

The sure fire way to get this kid away from screens is to get him into a book series! Here’s a throwback to the time he met one of his favorite authors, who wrote the Michael Vey series.
Although not every kid is a voracious reader, I’ve found that making sure they have a time-consuming hobby is a great way to distract them from the easy go-to of electronics. Here are some of our kids hobbies/pastimes:
🌟Rubik’s cube solving (officially called cubing)
🌟Legos
🌟YouTube drawing lessons
🌟drumming
🌟playing make believe (office, store, bank, restaurant)
Sometimes when we resort to electronics it’s because our mind doesn’t go to some of these other activities...so think about creating a jar full of pieces of paper with non-screentime activities that everyone can go to when our brain’s default is a tablet or TV.
Most of all, remember to be patient and create realistic goals for your family’s screen time usage—do not set yourself up for failure! You’ve got this!!

It is so easy to be hard on yourself as a parent! Just remember that everyone is going through this as well. Remember to tale a step back and think realistically as a parent.

⏮Throwback to that time we had to inform our daughter she would be getting brother number ***7️⃣***. 😱😆🤪

Conversations with teens can be tough—this was not the hardest one we’ve ever had—but there have been some doozys ➡️ misunderstandings on both sides, raised voices, tears, slammed doors, the works. 😳😡😭😬

Although hormones and regular adolescent development can be the source of some of the communication issues we experience with our tweens/teens, there are definitely some tactics that work better than others. 👏👏👏

On this week’s podcast, real-life mom Melissa shares some breakthroughs she has had raising lots of daughters (several who are now adults) and Shawn explains how it works to our advantage when kids see we aren’t actually perfect human beings.

It’s so hard to see your children be in pain. In fact, my hardest moments as a mom have been when I see my children suffering, whether it be physically, mentally, or emotionally, and I feel like I can’t do anything to help.

Although this photo shows an instance where I had to support my little guy through a tough medical procedure, this week’s episode addresses mental and emotional health (see link in bio to listen).

Seeing your child experience depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues can test even the strongest parent.

Dr. Courtney Conley offers some wise advice for parents trying to help their child through tough times (and the counsel is actually beneficial to parents of children stifling through anything, really).

It takes marathon endurance sometimes to support and nurture our children as they face obstacles. And we need to remember that if we don’t fuel ourselves (through self-care) for the marathon, we won’t make it through the 26 miles. We won’t be able to show up for our kids for the long haul.

So if you are in that boat, we have two things to say to you—first, take some time for yourself to fill your cup and meet your needs and, second, look for help—for other people to join your team in supporting your child. Whether it be a therapist, a mentor, a grandparent, a family friend, you aren’t meant to be the only team member. It’s okay to ask for assistance. You don’t have to be supermom, or superdad...

You (and your team) have got this!!!

We are rooting for you...

Do you struggle knowing how to support your teenage daughter through the ups and downs of adolescence, let alone issues such as anxiety and depression?

This week’s episode with Dr. Courtney Conley, author of “Your Daughter Doesn’t Have to Miserable: An Approach to Supporting Your Teenage Daughter Through Depression.”

During the episode, you will learn some awesome tools that will help you “show up” for your child who is going through a difficult time.

My *ONLY* daughter just “graduated” from her teenage years and I really wish I would have know some of these tips earlier! However, the advice Dr. Conley gives is honestly not gender or age-specific, and there’s just so much great content in this episode for parents no matter the ages or stages of their children.

Child Number 8. My last baby. I cried when the nurse-anesthetist started my epidural. Not because it hurt, but because I knew I would never again be personally participating in the pregnancy/childbirth stages again. And, as difficult as they could be, they are also beautiful.

Does this photo reflect the feelings of doubt that followed the arrival of this baby?

“Could I survive parenting 8 children and meet all their needs, from nursing a baby to helping teens navigate anxiety?”

“What if I didn’t have the endurance?”

“What if I just didn’t have the energy?”

“What if I’m not the Supermom everyone assumes I am?”

We all doubt. We all wonder if we can do it.

This podcast is here to tell you it’s okay to doubt and to hold space for you while you do. It’s also here to celebrate your successes and hold space for you when you have a win.

Parenting isn’t about arriving somewhere, it’s about a journey.

It’s not about waiting for that moment when the last child turns 18 and is out of the house to breathe a sigh of relief...it’s about breathing the whole way through. It’s about taking in the wonder and the overwhelm and the beauty and the despair that is parenthood.

And all I can say is that we are here with you for the long haul.

Shawn and I are in your corner.

You’ve got this. 💙

😣It’s not comfortable not knowing what to do as a parent...but answers are never found in a state of panic, fear, or confusion.

💡When we relax into a state of acceptance about not knowing what to do at that moment, and PAUSE from the chaotic thought processes, we often get those light-bulb moments that we were so desperately seeking before.

🧘‍♀️Answers come in peace, not panic.

🙌You’ve got this!

💖You are the perfect parent for your child.
