Firsthand Weather North Georgia We provide short and long-range weather forecasts for North Georgia.

30/08/2024

Storms have managed to fire over parts of North Georgia, despite the ridge in place. It’s just that it’s so hot that storms have been able to break through some of the capping in place. We saw some isolated activity earlier in the afternoon, and outflow boundaries generated by those storms have induced additional storm development this evening. I expected that most of North Georgia would make it about another day without having too much storm activity, but apparently some of you are lucking out a little sooner with the rain. -Matthew

A thick plume of Saharan dust will arrive tomorrow after traveling thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean. We can expect hazy skies and reduced air quality across the Tennessee Valley on Friday.

A severe thunderstorm watch could be issued for parts of North Georgia this afternoon, mainly due to a straight-line, damaging wind risk. An organized cluster of storms (with individual cells ahead of it), is now moving southeastward across eastern Tennessee. In addition to the wind risk, lots of lightning and a flash flooding potential will pose issues as well. -Matthew

I know we have a dry/hot pattern shaping up this week for North Georgia, but honestly, it won't be that bad. N Georgia's position, relative to the strong ridge over the Northeast and surface high pressure over the western Atlantic, will favor easterly flow across N. Georgia this week. Air coming off of the southeast Atlantic is much milder (except over the Gulf stream) than what it would be coming from the Gulf of Mexico. So we're talking lower humidity, especially from Tuesday onward, with slightly above average temperatures in N. Georgia. If you ask me, that's not too bad. It won't last though, the higher humidity will return the following week, if not a little sooner. -Matthew

A cool front will works it way through N. Georgia tonight. Drier and much less humid air will filter in behind the front throughout the day on Friday, as shown by this Friday afternoon dew point forecast. So, it’ll feel much nicer than it did today.

Humidity levels will recover quite a bit by late weekend/early week, but another front will knock down humidity levels again around the middle of the week. -Matthew

Did the storms wake you up this morning? I do see that there were some damaging wind reports in the northern half of North Georgia. -Matthew

A strong to severe line of storms will drop down into N. Georgia from Tennessee just before/around sunrise in the morning. Some of the model guidance has these storms dissipating before reaching I-20, but they'll probably hold together and remain quite strong. Damaging winds will be the primary severe risk, though isolated tornadoes might be possible too. A bout of moderate to heavy rain and lightning will also accompany these storms, but the storms will move through at a pretty fast clip.

A cold front will push through the forecast area by Monday night. Ahead of the front, the atmosphere may recover by Memorial Day afternoon to support some isolated to scattered storms. Storms shouldn't be as widespread as the morning activity. Just keep an eye on the radar and the latest forecast if you have Memorial Day plans.

By Tuesday and onward, the weather is going to be NICE. Average to even below-average temperatures and lower humidity will arrive behind the front. That nasty ridge over Mexico into the Gulf of Mexico will remain well outside of N Georgia over the coming week, thank goodness. -Matthew

The strong ridge over Mexico/Texas and Florida will stubbornly remain in place over the next 7+ days. Fortunately for North Georgia, the bulk of the severe heat will remain to the south and southwest, but temperatures will still run 5-10+ degrees above average during the day and at night.

The temperature/humidity will generally trend upward as we approach the weekend. So yes, it could be worse, but for those who strongly dislike the heat (aka 90-degree weather), you probably won't be a fan of this pattern.

Here are the projected high temperatures for today and tomorrow. -Matthew
