This Black Film Director Is Making The Movie She Wish She'd Seen Growing Up

Hi readers!
Bringing you all attention to a brilliant article written about female director, Tchaiko Omawale. The upcoming release of her film 'Solace', features strong WOC characters, with a focus on very real coming of age issues, such as body image and eating disorders. This film is not like any other 'chick-flick', a category which it might find itself in. Rather, it is an inspirational cinematic that gives representation to women of colour through film.
It is about time we see such a beautiful film made available to all of our screens!
Go check out the full article below, as well as the trailer for a sneak peak!

"[We're] really invested in telling our very specific stories and they're all really different. But they're all real and authentic. It just hasn't been told before."

Have your say: Who do you think should be our (reclaim) page 3 girl?

Here are our (reclaim) Page 3 girls!

VOTE AT:http://www.poll-maker.com/poll491768x526d42BA-20

(1)The feminist 5
Arrested in February 2015 The 'Feminist 5' activists were detained for 37 days before being released.
The group had been planning to hand out anti-groping flyers and stickers in the city to highlight s*xual harassment on international women's day. Police arrested them on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”
Their arrest sparked major international and domestic criticism of the government. The group of 5 represent an emerging generation of Chinese feminism which has been able to use social media platforms and new technology to raise awareness of feminism and create a broader feminist movement within the country. The arrest of the women created much outrage on social media, and many women donned masks of the group in solidarity.
One of the activists has argued that “Gender discrimination is getting worse” in china, and feminists are dismissed as ‘man haters’.

(2)Ellen Ochoa is the current Director of the Johnson Space Centre and a former NASA astronaut.
Ochoa has managed to forge a pathway to the top of a field predominantly made up of men. In college she followed a path in engineering despite being told that engineering was not a woman’s field by her college professor.
It took 3 applications to be accepted at NASA training program, but perseverance paid off and she manned 4 space flights spending nearly 1000 hours in space in her career. NASA only began accepting women to the training program in 1978. Since then 19 women have flown with NASA.
Ochoa admits ‘women weren't accepted into the astronaut corps until I was halfway through college, so I hadn't considered it as a career when I was young.’ However she is now a role model for young girls around the world interested in science and engineering.
'I tell students that the opportunities I had were a result of having a good educational background. Education is what allows you to stand out.'
'What everyone in the astronaut corps shares in common is not gender or ethnic background, but motivation, perseverance, and desire - the desire to participate in a voyage of discovery.'

(3)Sonita Alizadeh
Sonita was only ten years old when her parents first tried to sell her into marriage. Thankfully this marriage fell through. However when she was sixteen this issue was raised again; her mother insisted that she had to be sold into marriage so the family could raise the funds for a $7'000 dowry for her brother's new bride. Sonita claims this is when she realised how little she was worth in comparison to her brother and she decided to do something about it. Sonita wrote and recorded a rap song called 'Brides for Sale', after posting it on YouTube this clip quickly gained recognition. In 2014 she was offered a scholarship to the Wasatch Academy in Utah to study music. Alizadeh continues to campaign against child marriage from her university in the USA.

Voice your opinion on the poll: Who do you think should be our (reclaim) page 3 girl?

The third nominee is Viola Davis

‘The stain of racism and s*xism, is not just for people of color or women, it’s all of our burden, all of us, and we absolutely, I don’t care how ordinary you may feel, we, all of us can inspire change, every single one of us.’

‘Do not live someone else's life, and someone else's idea of what womanhood is. Womanhood is you, womanhood is everything that is inside of you.’

Viola Davis became the first African-American woman to win ‘lead female role’ Emmy at the award show in September 2015. She used the opportunity of her acceptance speech to criticise the lack of diversity in Hollywood, and highlighted the importance of intersectional feminism.

If Viola's your girl you can vote for her here: http://goo.gl/SwDE4i

05/10/2015

Second Nominee is Mary Wollstonecraft

‘I do not wish them [women] to have power over men; but over themselves’

‘Women ought to have representatives, instead of being arbitrarily governed without any direct share allowed them in the deliberations of government.’

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) was woman ahead of her time and is now considered to be one of the founding feminist philosophers. A prolific writer, and activist, Wollstonecraft is particularly famous for writing A Vindication of the rights of Women (1792) which argues that men and women should be treated equally, stating that they are human beings deserving of the same fundamental rights as men—a pretty radical idea at the time!

‘I would rather be a beggar and single than a queen and married.’

Queen Elizabeth 1 England, (1558 – 1603) came to power in 1559 and until recently was the longest reigning monarch. She managed to challenge common views of women, and proved herself to be a competent leader. She proved herself to be a strong and effective queen in times of crisis such as the Spanish armada. Throughout her life she remained staunch in her refusal to marry despite social pressures.

CALLING ALL FEMINISTS CREATIVE and/or ORGANISED and PASSIONATE/

Hey guys, I’m Rachel, your Zine Editor for this year. If you're new to the group and haven't heard about the Zine already, it’s a magazine put out 3 times a year which deals with women’s issues by the women’s network and Feminist Society. It is fulled with articles, creative writing, artwork and other stuff all based around a theme.

Anyone is welcome to contribute and right now, we’re looking for a small group of enthusiasts to help edit and design each issue! Commitment wise, we’re asking for a few hours per meeting, probably twice a month which will fit around everyone’s time schedules. This will be to research, collect other’s work and help to design the final issue.

Committing now does not mean committing for the whole year, so if you want to try it out, give me a message and I’ll send on more details about potential upcoming meetings/stuff in fresher’s week etc. NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE REQUIRED-just a strong sense of social justice etc.etc.

Here is a link to previous Zines in case you haven't seen what kind of thing you'll be dealing with! http://issuu.com/wnzine
