Yasodhara, the woman who was married to the one who became the Buddha, is not the focus of most early Buddhist texts. She is a key player during a few moments in the Buddha’s life, but otherwise, we know little about her. Indeed, Yasodhara is so marginalized in some cases that she does not even receive a name. She is known simply as Rahulamata—Rahula’s mother.
Scholar Vanessa R. Sasson spent most of her academic career exploring the various versions of Yasodhara’s narratives. Read an excerpt from her novel, Yasodhara and the Buddha, in which she offers her own telling of Yasodhara’s story, here.

Wishing all a Happy Dakini Day!

"I am not saying that you should go home and clear out all your things - that is not the point. The point is this question of opening the heart, of really being able to rejoice in giving to others - not just material things. Material things are good things to start with but we can also give other things like our time, our sympathy, being there when others need us, giving fearlessness."
~Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo

Flashback Friday: Jetsunma is the most senior western nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, who also took full ordination as a bhikkhuni in Hong Kong.

Living in her vows since the age of 21, she embodies genuine altruistic loving kindness, compassion, wisdom and equanimity. Her smile is from the depths of her being. Her way shows us a clear image of the feminine divine. No one but oneself can walk the path, but we are all so very blessed to have such a genuine guide.
