Well folks, it was inevitable.

I took a few months off, had to get my head right around why I was doing this show. My #1 motivation was to help this podcasting community I love so much. My over dramatic passion and intense reviews at times weren't always met with the most excited responses (admittedly some of these episodes were like I was telling some folks their baby was ugly). But for the most part it was all coming from a place driven by sharing my knowledge to help others grow, while trying to keep it light and entertaining every single day. It was fun.

Well it's with a heavy heart that I announce that you haven't gotten rid of me yet. ;)

Hey friends!

I’ve been insanely inconsistent and I owe you a boat load of episodes. I thank you for your patience as I’ve been trying to get back at it, definitely not as easy as I thought it would be with my hand in a cast.

TL;DR: I’m getting better and been contemplating feedback.

I’ve been taking the time however, to reflect, go through some feedback, and think about the future of this podcast. Not even sure it’s a show, as much as it is a public review. What do you think it is.

The majority consensus I’ve heard from feedback has been “it’s just not enough to do a full review of my show”. And that bothers me, because I’m not sure I agree with that. While I understand if a show is a lengthy audio novel, if a listener can’t get into your show or get an understanding of what it’s about after a full episode, is that fair of any listener to ask they commit to listening to multiple shows?

Is it unfair to make a judgement on an entire shows quality after one episode listen? I tend to still think so. My instinct here is to assume that’s the general response from those who I don’t give a “high score” (which lets be honest, has no value to anyone outside of the person who submitted). I tend to think it’s a crutch to lean on because folks have been told their show is “perfect” by friends and family. “If you don’t like it, you just didn’t listen enough” is that fair to ask? Is it fair to ask a new listener?

I’m not sure, would love to hear your feedback on this!!

As the show approaches its 200th episode, I'm seriously considering throwing an anchor ad on.... I don't expect that it would earn much more than a cup of coffee here or there, but I could also share what I end up earning and how I use it (most likely dumping it straight back into the show).

Any thoughts, concerns or opinions on that?

Quick update on the Spotify situation. As some of you are aware, we were taken offline abruptly by Spotify.

After some communication with the kind folks at anchor, Spotify and iHeartMedia, I found that my show was taken down due to the What they did right: “MTV Behind the Music” episode.

The interesting part was that it wasn’t taken down because of the title, the audio or even the description. iHeartmedias problem was that I used their ARTWORK.

NOTED and FIXED.

So the show should be back up on Spotify in the next few days. Thanks to everyone to emailed and messaged and thank you for your patience!

We always keep learning. Onward and upward!

Hey friends. Looks like the shows been unceremoniously removed from Spotify today with no communication with me whatsoever. I’m working with Anchor/Spotify to get to the bottom of it.

My guess is that it’s one of three things:

1. My “what they did right” episodes which review big name podcasts was causing copyright infringement concerns. (Insane if you ask me considering the praise and length of content I actually play of their shows)

2. Spotify looked at the titles and made the assumption that I was reposting podcast episodes for traffic or profit without listening to episodes for context.

3. Some salty podcasters reported me because they got a crap review.

In any case, I think none of it is of any concern to me other than it may make it a little difficult for some to hear a review of their show. Outside of that, all I care about is that podcasters get the feedback they need.

I’ll get to the bottom of this and will let you know what’s going on.

So sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your patience!!

After some pretty heavy consideration, self reflection and just thought.... I've come to the conclusion that I'll be making some changes to the Just One Listen podcast. (I'll also address this in the Friday episode)

I've noticed recently that feedback (usually from shows that didn't review well) has typically been around this idea that I "skip around" episodes and that I'm doing this for no other reason that to "roast" shows. This has been resulting in some pretty nasty reviews and emails that I don't necessarily get the opportunity to respond to publicly which serves as little or no utility to those of you who actually get something out of the show.

Starting today, I'll begin pre-screening submissions. This means submissions will have to meet some (yet to be determined) standard base requirements before I spend your time (and mine) on it.

I believe this will open the show up to find new and exciting content and hopefully spend less time on shows that, quite honestly need more work than we can discuss in a 10-15 minute episode.

Thanks so much for supporting the show thus far. Those of you who get it, thanks for learning with me!

My fellow podcasters, you are in a creative space. You must get used to criticism and use it at fuel to motivate you as well a guiding light for what you can improve upon, rather than going to war.

It's been fascinating in this experience, reviewing well over 100 shows at this point, how many responses I get attempting to justify decisions or making excuses as to why something was created in such a way, as if telling me makes any difference.

The key I'd like to point out, is take it ALL in and USE it. Take what you think works for you or take none of it. Listen to your competition and learn what they're doing best, or go your own path and don't listen to them at all.

This show is just another tool you can leverage pull pieces from to improve your own... or not!

Whether I'm poking fun at horrible room acoustics, "zoom-itis", criticizing lazy production, applauding incredible editing, voice techniques or engineering, I do it all for the community and to have fun creating right along with you.

I'm going to keep pushing forward with this show, I have an absolute blast doing it. I never take myself too seriously nor should you. I wish all of you, my fellow creators, the best and can't wait to see what other genius, insane, funny, horrible, nightmarish and exciting podcasts we find out here!

Okay so after doing a little game tape review of my own, I’ve been noticing that a few episodes That my tone has been getting a tad intense.

So in an effort to be more constructive with the show I’m going to focus on adding some consistent structure to how I run these reviews rather than simply riffing.

I do truly love this space, and I tend to get frustrated when I’m asked to spend time listening to shows who don’t try (and sometimes even fabricate reality) when there are so many fantastic podcasts out there nobody has hear yet.

All that said, the show will continue to evolve and I thank you for listening!
